Celtic Linguistics 1700 - 1850 is a set of reprinted texts showing the growth of this subject during a key period in its history. Setting off from the antiquarian search for origins during the Renaissance, the texts trace the development and refinement of the subject until the introduction of the methods of comparative philology in the mid-nineteenth century. As the source of many modern popular conceptions of Celtic languages, the texts are of current as well as historical relevance.

Following on from Celtic Linguistics 1700-1850, this set covers the period 1850-1900, which saw the foundation of the modern subject of Celtic linguistics. Several important works are reproduced here, including: * Johann Kaspar Zeuss's seminal study, Grammatica Celtica (1853), the first text to formulate a detailed and comprehensive comparative grammar of the Celtic language. * John Rhys' Lectures on Welsh Philology (1877), and Whitley Stokes' Celtic Declension (1885), both of which reflect Zeuss's influence on the field. * Earlier traditions of the historical study of the Celts, with an emphasis on language, are continued in John Jones Thomas's Britannia Antiquissima; or, A Key to the Philology of History (1860). * Neo-druidic themes receive attention in John Williams's Gomer; or, A Brief Analysis of the Language and Knowledge of the Ancient Cymry (1854). This set covers a period of fundamental reformation in Celtic linguistics, and will be of interest to linguists, historians, and cultural theorists.

Daniel Jones (1881-1967) played a significant role in the emergence of phonetics as a fully developed academic discipline in the first half of the twentieth century. Jones's pioneering works are made easily accessible to scholars once again.

This volume forms part of a five volume set charting the progress of the nineteenth century movement which was instrumental in establishing international guidelines for the teaching of modern languages. It was during this period that for the first time, co-operation between phoneticians and teachers culminated in the publication of works that were instrumental in establishing the 'applied linguistic' approach to language teaching in the twentieth century. For the first time, too, the new science of psychology influenced a scientific theory of second language acquisition. The Reform Movement attracted support across Europe, spurring the development of new professional associations and journals. In turn, the publication in these journals of reports of innovative practice contributed to a greater sense of autonomy and professionalism among modern language teachers, who had hitherto tended to live under the shadow of classical language teaching. The practical innovations and theoretical suggestions for the foreign language teaching, although rooted in the nineteenth century, still have relevance today.

This collection focuses on the work of the major pioneers working in the 1920s and 1930s whose research and writings laid the methodological foundations for post-World War II British approaches to English as a foreign language teaching (ELT). These early pioneers included Harold E. Palmer (in Japan), Michael West (in India), and Laurence Faucett (in China). Separately and jointly (at the 1934-5 'Carnegie Conference'), they succeeded in establishing a principled basis for the teaching of English to speakers of other languages, different in significant respects from teaching English as a 'first language' in Britain and the Empire.

Following the Second World War, the British Council, along with British publishers and universities, began to take a serious interest in English as a foreign language teaching ('ELT') and the UK soon gained a dominant role in the development and export of teaching approaches and materials. This set includes the works of neglected theorists such as Horace Wyatt, who indicated that English can be taught through the mother tongue as well as 'directly', and Michael West, whose emphasis on the educational value of teaching reading 'in difficult circumstances' has often been ignored in favour of the more utilitarian, spoken-language approach to ELT.This set complements English as a Foreign Language Teaching, 1912-1936: Pioneers of ELT.

Co-published by Routledge and Edition SynapseBy the end of the nineteenth century, phonetics was increasingly recognized as a valid scientific discipline. While early experimental and instrumental research in speech science was concentrated in Germany, France, and the USA, in Britain—thanks to the pioneering work of scholars such as Alexander Melville Bell, Isaac Pitman, Alexander J. Ellis, and Henry Sweet—the emphasis was on what is now known as articulatory phonetics. (See further Phonetics of English in the Nineteenth Century (Routledge, 2006), compiled by the editors of the current collection.) These pioneers regarded their task as essentially one of observation and description. Although they were perfectly prepared to utilize scientific findings where these might assist their investigations, they did not consider experimental work to be their prime objective. The twentieth century saw the consolidation of previous efforts. Many of these developments were centred round the work of what has come to be called the British School of phonetics under the leadership of Daniel Jones, Professor of Phonetics at University College London. (Jones’s seminal contributions are documented in another set edited by Collins and Mees; see Daniel Jones: Selected Works (Routledge, 2002).) The present collection concentrates largely on the work of Jones’s colleagues at University College, and also documents how the British School extended its influence further afield—to Europe, North America, Japan and, effectively, worldwide.Although articulatory phonetics provides the thread running through the publications—now very difficult to obtain—that have been brought together in this collection, they vary widely in their content. This is consistent with the view of Jones and his colleagues that phonetics should be considered as a practical science, with many potential applications helping to provide solutions to problems encountered in the real world. An area of prime importance was the teaching of pronunciation to language learners, and in particular the acquisition of English pronunciation by non-natives. Apart from works devoted to second-language acquisition, and in particular to the teaching of English as an acquired language, this emphasis also led to the production of important English pronunciation dictionaries, including the Afzelius dictionary reproduced as Volume I of this collection. Other areas covered in the following volumes include key foundational work on dialectology, intonation theory and practice, the growth of broadcasting and the influence of radio (especially the BBC) on the establishment of a de facto standard southern British English pronunciation.Making readily available materials which have until now been very difficult for phoneticians, phonologists, and other linguists to locate and use, English Phonetics: Twentieth-Century Developments is a veritable treasure-trove. The gathered works are reproduced in facsimile, giving users a strong sense of immediacy to the texts and permitting citation to the original pagination. And with a substantial introduction, newly written by the editors, the collection is destined to be welcomed as a vital reference and research resource.

After a period during which pronunciation teaching has been somewhat out of favour in English Language Teaching (ELT), interest has revived in recent years. It is important, therefore, that sources are made available for applied linguists better to understand past approaches to pronunciation teaching. This new six-volume collection, co-published by Routledge and Editions Synapse, assembles all the key material in a one-stop reference resource. The collection gathers includes seminal texts by Harold Palmer, A. Lloyd James, and C. K. Ogden, and major works by Edmund Tilley, H. A. Harman, and J. D. O’Connor.
