The Chuquisaca and Tarija regions of Bolivia cover areas of extraordinarily varied vegetation, providing one of the most dramatic shifts in flora and vegetation along the eastern Andes. However, biological information for this area has remained very limited. This text is the result of the work of an interdisciplinary team of biologists who surveyed south-central Chuquisaca in May 1995. It describes the large uninterrupted tracts of Bosque-Tucuman-Boliviano wet forest with many endemic species, but reports that the area also suffers from heavy development pressures.
Biological Assessment of the Aquatic Ecosystems of the Upper Rio Orthon Basin, Pando, Bolivia
Rapid Assessment Program, Volume 15

The Upper Rio Orthon Basin of Pando, Bolivia, is a transition zone between moister lowland Amazonian forests and dryer deciduous forests. This largely unexplored region potentially harbours one of the most richly biodiverse aquatic systems within Bolivia, if not within the Amazon River basin. A multinational and multidisciplinary team of scientists surveyed the area to provide a baseline assessment of its biological and conservation value as well as the current and future threats facing the region. In just over two intensive weeks, scientists surveyed water quality, zooplankton, benthic macroinvertebrates, crustaceans and genetics.
Biological Assessment of the Aquatic Ecosystems of the Rio Paraguay Basin, Alto Paraguay, Paraguay

While the Rio Paraguay Basin is sparsely populated and poorly surveyed, and it has experienced relatively little human disturbance, it currently faces one large development project: the Hidrovia Paraguay-Parana, which proposes to dredge and channel extensive portions of the Rio Paraguay watershed, altering water flow and seasonal flooding cycles. Conservation International's rapid assessment team aided to document aquatic diversity and the state of the aquatic ecosystem in order to determine sustainable conservation and development strategies for the region.
Marine Rapid Assessment of the Togean and Banggai Islands, Sulawesi, Indonesia

The Togeans are a picturesque group of islands in the large Tomini Bay of Central Sulawesi, with coral reefs known for their vast biodiversity and rich marine resources. The Togean-Banggai archipelago was declared a marine tourist park in 1990, but fears exist about its long-term protection, and many organizations are working in concert to improve regional development planning and natural resource management, including community-protected areas. This rapid assessment offers an idea of the many species of fish, coral and other marine life present in the region, collecting the raw data necessary to ensure conservation efforts are informed and efficient.

Parque Nacional Noel Kempff Mercado, located in eastern Bolivia where the moist forests of the Amazon meet the dry forests of the Cerrado, contains numerous unique ecosystems and exceptionally high levels of biodiversity. This book presents the results not only of an intensive biological survey of the area conducted in 1991, but also of long-term research conducted from 1987 to 1995. Among other findings, the survey discovered 26 new species of plants, one new mammal species, and three new species of reptiles. This report, with text in both English and Spanish, includes extensive data appendices, a large fold-out satellite map of vegetation, and conservation recommendations for the region.
Marine Rapid Assessment of the Raja Ampat Islands, Papua Province, Indonesia
RAP 22
Häftad, Engelska, 2002

Tillfälligt slut
The Raja Ampat islands are another example of a highly diverse coral ecosystem under threat. Such regions stand out not only because of their species richness, endemism and habitat level diversity, but also because of their relatively pristine condition. Yet portions of these coral ecosystems face imminent destruction and degradation because of over-fishing or destructive fishing, pollution, population growth and the urbanization of coastlines. This rapid assessment catalogs the current biological state of the Raja Ampat islands and assess potential threats.

Biologically, New Ireland is one of the least-studied regions of Papua New Guinea - its mountainous southern zone has long been considered both a high priority for biodiversity conservation and a major "scientific unknown". Conservation International agreed to organize a rapid assessment of the forests and wildlife of southern New Ireland. The purpose of the rapid assessment exercise was threefold: to assess the biodiversity of southern New Ireland, to field-test rapid-survey methodology in Papua New Guinea, and to share expertise and methodologies with staff scientists from Papua New Guinea's Department of Environment and Conservation.
Rapid Marine Biodiversity Assessment of Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea--Survey II (2000)
RAP 29

Tillfälligt slut
Based on Conservation International's successful terrestrial biological survey approach, the Marine Rapid Assessment Program's goal is to rapidly generate and disseminate information on coastal and near-shore shallow-water marine biodiversity. Its surveys yield appropriate and realistic recommendations for conservation—and have, at times, resulted in the finding of new species. This marine assessment surveys the coral reefs of Papua New Guinea's Milne Bay Province, which plays an integral role in sustaining coastal communities and represents an important component of the nation's rich natural heritage. Until recently, this environment was under minimal stress, threatened only by a small human population. Now, however, there are increasing signs of habitat degradation due to land-based activities and over-harvesting of sedentary marine resources. Milne Bay Province contains some of the best examples of undisturbed coral reefs in the entire Coral Triangle region, making it vitally important for both government agencies and communities to respond to these threats.
Biological Assessment of the Aquatic Ecosystems of the Pastaza River Basin, Ecuador and Peru
RAP Bulletin of Biological Assessment 33

This report contains the biological findings and conservation recommendations of an aquatic expedition along the Pastaza River, one of the least disturbed of the upper Amazon River tributaries. The scientific team discovered moderate to high species richness; they concluded that the area has high conservation potential because of its relative intactness—a product of its remoteness and the low density of human population nearby.
Rapid Biological Assessment of the Mantadia-Zahamena corridor, Madagascar
RAP Bulletin of Biological Assessment #32

The Mantadia-Zahamena corridor of Madagascar contains some of the country's last remaining low- and mid-elevation rainforests. This French-language volume presents the results of an expedition to survey the biodiversity of the region, during which three sites of high biological importance were identified based on species richness, abundance, and disturbance. Given the paramount significance of Madagascar in global conservation efforts and the high value of Mantadia-Zahamena in particular, the researchers conclude that these three sites deserve immediate conservation action. This report also documents the discovery of new species of frogs and reptiles and sixteen new species of ants.
Rapid Biological Assessment of North Lorma, Gola and Grebo National Forests, Liberia

Liberia's national forests are among the last refuges in West Africa for large migrating mammals. This volume summarizes the findings of a biodiversity survey of three forests as part of the Liberia Forestry Initiative, an effort to rehabilitate and reform Liberia's threatened woodlands. The survey found each forest to harbor a wealth of biodiversity and a significant number of species of conservation concern. Researchers here document the discovery of six species new to science, report eighteen new findings for Liberia, and present conservation recommendations based on survey results.

This report contains the findings from a rapid biological assessment of the Kwamalasamutu region of southwestern Suriname. Focusing on the plant and animal species important to the indigenous Trio people, this survey establishes baseline information on the region's biodiversity and ecosystem health in order to better inform ecotourism and monitoring efforts. The RAP team found the Kwamalasamutu region to harbor rich biodiversity, with few signs of ecosystem degradation, and at least forty-six of the species identified in this volume are new to science. Further conservation and management recommendations are provided.
