Classical string theory is concerned with the propagation of classical 1-dimensional curves 'strings', and the theory has connections to the calculus of variations, minimal surfaces and harmonic maps. The quantization of string theory gives rise to problems in different areas, according to the method used. In 1961 Robinson introduced an entirely new version of the theory of infinitesimals, which he called "Nonstandard analysis". "Nonstandard" here refers to the nature of new fields of numbers as defined by nonstandard models of the first-order theory of the reals. This system of numbers was closely related to the ring of Schmieden and Laugwitz, developed independently a few years earlier. During the last 30 years the use of nonstandard models in mathematics has taken its rightful place among the various methods employed by mathematicians. Partial differential equations constitute an integral part of mathematics. They lie at the interface of areas as diverse as differential geometry, functional analysis, or the theory of Lie groups and have numerous applications in the applied sciences. A wealth of methods has been devised for their analysis. Over the past decades, operator algebras in connection with ideas and structures from geometry, topology, and theoretical physics have contributed a large variety of particularly useful tools. One typical example is the analysis on singular configurations, where elliptic equations have been studied successfully within the framework of operator algebras with symbolic structures adapted to the geometry of the underlying space. More recently, these techniques have proven to be useful also for studying parabolic and hyperbolic equations. Moreover, it turned out that many seemingly smooth, noncompact situations can be handled with the ideas from singular analysis. The three papers at the beginning of this volume highlight this aspect. They deal with parabolic equations, a topic relevant for many applications. The first article prepares the ground by presenting a calculus for pseudo differential operators with an anisotropic analytic parameter. In the subsequent paper, an algebra of Mellin operators on the infinite space-time cylinder is constructed. It is shown how timelike infinity can be treated as a conical singularity.

Between these years, in the then changing and turbulent circumstances for Europe, lies the all too brief life of this remarkable woman. This life was lived out within the great European centers of power and learning in Russia, France, Germany, Switzerland, England and Sweden. To this day, now 150 years after her birth, her influence for and contribution to mathe matics, science, literature, women's rights and democratic government are recorded and reviewed, not only in Europe but now in countries far removed in time and distance from the lands of her birth and being. This volume, dedicated to her memory and to her achievements, records the Proceedings of the Marcus Wallenberg Symposium held, in memory of Sonja Kovalevsky, at Stockholm University from 18 to 22 June 2000. The symposium was held at the Department of Mathematics with its excellent library and lecture halls providing favourable working conditions. Within these pages are contained a curriculum vitae for Sonja Kovalevsky, a list of all her scientific publications, together with a copy of the moving and elegant obituary notice written by her friend and protector Gosta Mittag-Leffler. These papers are followed by a leading article entitled Sonja Kovalevsky: Her life and professorship in Stockholm, written especially for this volume by Jan-Erik Bjork in preparation for his major address to the Symposium.

Sergio Albeverio reviews the theory of Dirichlet forms, and gives applications including partial differential equations, stochastic dynamics of quantum systems, quantum fields and the geometry of loop spaces. The second text, by Walter Schachermayer, is an introduction to the basic concepts of mathematical finance, including the Bachelier and Black-Scholes models. The fundamental theorem of asset pricing is discussed in detail. Finally Michel Talagrand, gives an overview of the mean field models for spin glasses. This monograph treats the theory of Dirichlet forms from a comprehensive point of view, using "nonstandard analysis." Thus, it is close in spirit to the discrete classical formulation of Dirichlet space theory by Beurling and Deny (1958). The discrete infinitesimal setup makes it possible to study the diffusion and the jump part using essentially the same methods. This setting has the advantage of being independent of special topological properties of the state space and in this sense is a natural one, valid for both finite- and infinite-dimensional spaces. The present monograph provides a thorough treatment of the symmetric as well as the non-symmetric case, surveys the theory of hyperfinite Lévy processes, and summarizes in an epilogue the model-theoretic genericity of hyperfinite stochastic processes theory.

Next to the harmonic oscillator and the Coulomb potential the class of two-body models with point interactions is the only one where complete solutions are available.
