The concept of the Nordic model played an important role in the ideological and political rejuvenation of the Northern and Southern European political left from the 1970s to the 1990s. In a witness seminar organized by the Centre for Nordic Studies at Helsinki University, the Institute for Contemporary History at Södertörn University and the Department of History and Classical Studies at Aarhus University, key political actors for the development of European social democracy and Northern and Southern processes of European integration discuss the fortunes of the Nordic model from the 1970s to the 1990s. Participants included: Allan Larsson (former Minister for Finance of Sweden), Mogens Lykketoft (former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, leader of the Social Democrats) and Joaquín Almunia (former Minister of Public Administration of Spain and leader of PSOE). The witness seminar is funded by the Joint Committee for Nordic research councils in Humanities and Social Sciences (NOS-HS).

Between National and Academic Agendas : Ethnic Policies and ‘National Disciplines’ at the University of Latvia, 1919–1940

How was the national agenda of a previously subordinated, ruling Latvian majority reconciled with established academic practices for appointments and enrolment – candidates judged on merit irrespective of ethnicity? Following the disintegration of the Russian Empire, the ethnic Latvian majority assumed power and used state resources to further their national project. Complex national issues arose when a new university, teaching in Latvian, was founded in 1919 – Latvian was a language previously regarded as a peasant vernacular wholly unsuitable for cultural or academic purposes. During the same period the Latvian state was a multi-ethnic parliamentary democracy containing several ethnic minorities, all with full citizenship rights. Some of these minorities, the Baltic Germans and the Jews in particular, possessed considerable cultural capita land experience of academia. The inherent conflicts and compromises in this double agenda are the main focus of Between National and Academic Agendas.

Academics and Politics : Northern European Area Studies at Greifswald University, 1917–1991

Inspired by the need to increase general awareness of foreign sentiments and cultures the Prussian Parliament decided in 1917 to found Area Studies Institutes. In the University of Greifswald the reform saw the establishment of the Nordic Institute, an interdisciplinary institute that was to study Northern Europe in a wide variety of aspects and disciplines. Beholden to interdisciplinarity and implicitly political tasks, the Nordic Institute and its successor institutions remained an oddity in the university, existing in a field of tension between politics and academia. This study tracks the development of the Nordic Institute under four different political regimes, the interaction between scholars, their academic environment, and the political system. It asks for the motivation and outcome of scholarly cooperation with the regimes, and tries to contextualize the specific problems of Area Studies in German academia. Marco Nase is a historian working at the Institute for History and Contemporary Studies at Södertörns Högskola.

Learning to think with business students : University teachers' experiences of challenges in teaching in higher education
Häftad, Engelska, 2025

Here, eight university teachers in business administration describe their own teaching situations, on the basis of which they, with the help of pedagogical and philosophical theories, examine and reflect on their practical knowledge. What can these teachers’ accounts and reflections tell us about the working situation of university teachers? When problematic situations arise, how are they dealt with? How do the teachers encourage students with widely different expectations, contrasting backgrounds, and with varying degrees of motivation, to learn new ways of thinking and to develop into independent professionals? Originally published in Swedish in 2014, this volume offers a compelling picture of how university teachers grapple with pedagogical challenges in a higher education system increasingly focused on efficiency and maximizing the number of students who complete their studies. The difficulties described by the teachers then have not diminished – if anything, they have grown. For this English edition, a new preface has been added, situating the discussion in a contemporary context of higher education pedagogy, along with a new chapter exploring how the transformation of the university system has impacted the actual practice of teaching today.
