This volume provides the first English translations of The Tale of Troy and The Tale of Achilles, two medieval Greek romances by anonymous authors of the 14th/15th centuries that narrate the lives and loves of Achilles and Paris before and during the Trojan War.Set in the deep past of Greek mythology, these poems follow Achilles and Paris through their childhoods and their first stirrings of romance to the events that brought them to Troy, where both ultimately died. These tales, however, are also deeply of their own time, the late Byzantine period. A scholarly yet accessible introduction provides the political, historical, and literary contexts that shaped the production of these marvelous texts. Particular attention is given to intercultural exchanges in the late Byzantine period, marked by invasions of Crusaders and Ottomans who left a lasting impact not just on the political structures of the eastern Mediterranean but also on its literary production, introducing new words, new chivalric ideals, and new genres. These translations aim to make these poems accessible to anyone with an interest in the Trojan War; medieval romances; the literature of the Byzantine Empire; or the lives of Achilles, Paris, Helen, and other famous heroes of Greek myth.

The corpus of Palaiologan romances consists of about a dozen works of imaginative fiction from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries which narrate the trials and tribulations of aristocratic young lovers. This volume brings together leading scholars of Byzantine literature to examine the corpus afresh and aims to be the definitive work on the subject, suitable for scholars and students of all levels. It offers interdisciplinary and transnational approaches which demonstrate the aesthetic and cultural value of these works in their own right and their centrality to the medieval and early modern Greek, European and Mediterranean literary traditions. From a historical perspective, the volume also emphasizes how the romances represent a turning point in the history of Greek letters: they are a repository of both ancient and medieval oral poetic and novelistic traditions and yet are often considered the earliest works of Modern Greek literature.

This book explores how Modernist movements all across the Mediterranean basin differed from those of other regions. The chapters show how the political and economic turmoil of a period marked by world war, revolution, decolonization, nationalism, and the rapid advance of new technologies compelled artists, writers, and other intellectuals to create a new hybrid Mediterranean Modernist aesthetic which sought to balance the tensions between local and foreign, tradition and innovation, and colonial and postcolonial.

This book examines how Jewish intellectuals during and after the Second World War reinterpreted Homer’s epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, in light of their own wartime experiences, drawing a parallel between the ancient Greek genocide of the Trojans and the Nazi genocide of the Jews.

This book is about “zero generation” witness literature: texts written by those who died in the Holocaust and who knew, at the time of their writing, that they would not survive.
