National climate policy trajectories have unfolded in vastly different shapes and ambition in the past 30 years, raising significant questions. In particular: why do governments across the globe pursue climate policy in such vastly different ways despite the global nature of the climate change challenge and the international agreements struck since the early 1990s?This book provides a new understanding and evidence of government responses to climate change. It does so by using a novel mixed-methods research design that combines global mapping of climate policymaking, statistical analyses of climate policy investments in 30 high-emitting Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, and six in-depth country case studies of climate change acts in Canada, Germany, Mexico, Nepal, South Africa, and the UK. While climate change is a global threat, this research reveals striking differences in the ambition of national climate policy initiatives and how these differences are shaped by different domestic government motives, institutional means, and political opportunities (the MMO framework).Exploring the strategic and multifaceted motives of governments, fossil fuel interest groups, and climate policy advocates, and the institutional means and political opportunities that underpin them, The Comparative Politics of Climate Policy Investment synthesizes a new, revised interactive logic and has important implications for future scholarship and policy making.This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence.
