While there are many books on "how to patent" and patent law, Essentials of Patents delivers practical advice on how to leverage patents as a powerful competitive corporate tool. This is not your "ordinary patent book". It's emphasis is directed to patent management with the express emphasis of increasing shareholder value, and it's audience, each with its own chapter, includes the CEO / ICO, CFO, CTO, and cross functional managers of HR, Engineering, Manufacturing and IT. Essentials of Patents is arguably one of the first works on intellectual property that drives home the importance of patent creation, protection and exploitation throughout the enterprise. Gibbs and DeMatteis show how patents can enhance competitive intelligence, product development cost reduction, product line expansion, and revenue streams, making this guide a must-have for the savvy manager. In it, the authors introduce a new management methodology: Patent Quality Management, or "PQM". With public company market values more than 90% attributable to the value of intangible assets and patents, the time has come for all corporate managers, not just R&D and legal counsel, to master intellectual property management in this competitive global market (and shareholders are demanding it).

Every year, thousands of uninformed inventors waste their time and money in the false pursuit of worthless patents. THE PATENT WRITER explains in detail how to write effective patent applications that can be filed for less than $100. In simple layman's terms, the book reveals pertinent patent laws and facts, discusses superior word usage, and explores the methodologies required to ensure that your patents cannot be exploited by others. First-time and experienced inventors / engineers alike will learn how to write powerful patent applications that support and protect their product's potential. Endorsed by leading inventors, patent attorneys, and government agencies, THE PATENT WRITER takes the mystery out of writing patents. It will save the reader thousands in attorney's fees, speed up product development, and help avoid the consequences of poorly written patent applications.

To most people InterCity means the network of trains linking the UK with London, but there is a far more interesting and often overlooked network that avoided London: Cross-country.The North East–South West route of British Rail linked Newcastle with Plymouth and Cardiff via Birmingham; added to this were the Manchester and Liverpool services that headed for the south coast and the odd train that crossed from one route to the other. Birmingham New Street was the hub for all of these services, with the exception of some services from East Anglia and the East Midlands. Over the years the North East–South West route became cross-country and extended its range well into Scotland. This book illustrates the diverse range of starting points and destinations used. Photos are mainly from the 1970s and 1980s, plus a few from the 1990s prior to privatisation and more standardisation than BR could ever have hoped for.

There are very few mainline railway routes that actually cross London. One of the few that does is the West London line between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction. The route has had its ups and downs over the years but has remained an important artery for freight throughout. Currently there are five passenger trains an hour in each direction, with several intermediate stations, but this was very different only a few years earlier. With just a couple of trains in the morning peak from Clapham Junction to Kensington Olympia and a similar number returning in the afternoon, you really had to search through the timetable to find the services at all. Excursion trains from the Midlands and further afield often used the West London line to get to the South Coast resorts. In later years a limited InterCity service operated over the route. This book covers the route between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction from the 1970s through to the 1990s, featuring the wide range of freight and interesting passenger workings that could be seen during this period.

British Railways’ modernisation plan permitted individual regions to specify locomotives to fit their own requirements rather than opt for a ‘one size fits all’ policy. As a result, the Southern Region with its third rail network ended up with some very specialised locomotives. Its thrifty reuse and rebuild policy also influenced this. The Class 09 shunters stayed entirely on the Southern until privatisation. The Class 71s and the rebuilt Class 74s were all bar one example scrapped very early on. The Class 33s and Class 73s have over the years trundled well off the Southern, and the fact that many Class 73s are still in everyday service after sixty years shows how versatile they are – bi-modes decades before it became fashionable.Andy Gibbs revisits Southern Region locomotives and charts their spread across the country during the 1970s and 1980s with a variety of fascinating and previously unpublished photographs.

In this volume Andy Gibbs returns to the Highlands, Lowlands and Borders of Scotland with many more images of trains in the region. The journey starts in southern and south-west Scotland, travels through the Central Belt before continuing into the Highlands and finishing at Wick and Thurso. The 1970s and 1980s are periods of British Rail’s history that seemed to be in terminal decline with its heavy industry customers also falling by the wayside. Locomotives featured include classes 06, 08, 24, 26, 27, 37, 40, 47 and electric locomotives, as well as multiple units from the branch and commuter lines. Trains are pictured in spectacular scenery, sites of industrial decay and urban cityscapes.Andy Gibbs offers the rail enthusiast a vibrant selection of previously unpublished photographs documenting the Scottish rail scene in the 1970s and 1980s.
