Biopolitics in Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th Century
Fearing for the Nation

The field of biopolitics encompasses issues from health and hygiene, birth rates, fertility and sexuality, life expectancy and demography to eugenics and racial regimes. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive view on these issues for Central and Eastern Europe in the twentieth century. The cataclysms of imperial collapse, World War(s) and the Holocaust but also the rise of state socialism after 1945 provided extraordinary and distinct conditions for the governing of life and death. The volume collects the latest research and empirical studies from the region to showcase the diversity of biopolitical regimes in their regional and global context – from hunger relief for Hungarian children after the First World War to abortion legislation in communist Poland. It underlines the similarities as well, demonstrating how biopolitical strategies in this area often revolved around the notion of an endangered nation; and how ideological schemes and post-imperial experiences in Eastern Europe further complicate a 'western' understanding of democratic participatory and authoritarian repressive biopolitics. The new geographical focus invites scholars and students of social and human sciences to reconsider established perspectives on the history of population management and the history of Europe.

The book answers fundamental questions about the processes of social negotiation of mentality shifts in communist Poland. Taking divorce, single motherhood, domestic violence and abortion as examples, it analyzes the level of acceptance toward tabus grounded in tradition, and the course of negotiating new meanings and using social exclusion when dealing with new phenomena. The author uses not only national documents, but also ego-documents and cultural texts to prove the macrosocietal dictatorship in the years 1956-1989 contributed not to the revolutionization of society at the family level, but to its perpetuation. The family references made by the communist authorities, especially in the last two decades of their regime, can be treated as one of the factors legitimizing the system.

Musealisation of Communism in Poland and East Central Europe

The monograph is the result of research conducted between 2014 and 2018 in historical museums in Central and Eastern Europe. The main goal of the book is to verify the thesis about the existence of supranational collective memory in societies affected by the shared experience of totalitarianism. The analysis of the extensive research material allowed the author to distinguish social practices and types of exhibitions. Historical policies conducted by individual states exhibit features in common, their goal being to accustom people to the difficult past, to shape the positive images of the countries and to create the cultural founding myths of the post-communist states. Historical museum exhibitions become the executors of these ideas by introducing official interpretations of the communist period.

Dr. Benken’s book is a case study of the life and death of Jan Rodowicz, nom-de-guerre Anoda, who served as a combatant in the Polish pro-independence underground resistance movement during the Second World War. The operations in which Anoda was involved, his conduct during and after the War, especially in the investigation following his arrest by the Communist security service and the mystery shrouding his death while under interrogation, turned him into a symbol for the young people of Poland in those times. His generation was forced to fight for its freedom against two criminal totalitarian systems, the Nazi Germans and the Soviets, paying with their life or health for the ideals they did not want to give up.

Predicting Insider Espionage — A Five-Factor Model
Inbunden, Engelska, 2024

Insider espionage has destabilized governments, jeopardized national security and critical infrastructures, diminished the economic strength of nations, and cost lives. Deterrence and detection — the two methods most used to combat this threat — often prove ineffective. The author, therefore, suggests placing more emphasis on prediction. This book is based on a four-year research project in which the author studied hundreds of cases of insider espionage in the government and private sectors across various countries. The project led to the development of the author’s Five-Factor Model of Insider Espionage, which he validated through multiple case analyses and a cross-case synthesis. This model aims to provide a framework to predict and thus mitigate the risks associated with insider espionage. The book will familiarize readers with the model and the underlying concepts.

History – Culture – Metaphor. On Historical Thinking
Inbunden, Engelska, 2024

Historiography is one of the most systematic accounts of the fate of culture. It is also a record of human—reflexive and reflective metaphors of the world, simultaneously anthropomorphizing and humanizing it. Historical imagination captures the world in its classical form directly, and in its non-classical form indirectly, through the lens of anthropomorphization. This enables the adaptation of the world to the human dimension or, in other words, to be constructed on a human scale. Historiography and historical thinking, especially the traditional forms, are close to the figures of public discourse because they offer meanings commensurate with it. Additionally, they are openly imbued with values, making them susceptible to easy, casual and biased interpretations. Thanks to these features, historical thinking and historiography provide a framework for texpressing currently important values and the common and specific emotions centered around them.

A pioneering synthesis of the history of Poland, 1914-1918, summing up 100 years of the work of historians on the period and outlining new research aims. An integrated approach to the story of the Russian, German, and Austro-Hungarian zones of partitioned Poland, culminating in the restoration of the country’s independence and its accommodation to the new political configuration in Europe after 1918. The book uses a combination of the research tools of social and cultural history, anthropology, and environmental history, showing the everyday life of ordinary people alongside military and diplomatic affairs. The policies pursued by the Partitioning and Occupying Powers are juxtaposed with the activities of Polish pro-independence groups and Pi³sudski’s Legions.
