Cinema can both reflect the world as it is and offer escape from it. In Modernity at the Movies, Camila Gatica Mizala explores the ideas of reflection versus escapism and examines how modes of understanding the current moment emerged through the practice of going to the movies in Santiago and Buenos Aires between 1915 and 1945. Using cinema and variety magazines published in both cities, she analyzes the technology, architecture, attendance, behavior, language, censorship, and overall experience of cinema-going. Gatica Mizala brings together the perception and reception of cinema as a modern art form, shifting the focus from the production of films to the experience of the audience when viewing them. By focusing on the audience instead of the films, this study effectively articulates the ways that cinema, as a modern activity, was incorporated into everyday life and discuss what it meant to be modern in early- to mid-century Latin America.

An innovative, interdisciplinary perspective on soft power in history, moving beyond the framework of the nation-stateStarting in the nineteenth century, as world events became more interconnected than ever, and as public opinion began to weigh on democratic governments, nations employed new communication strategies and propaganda to gain global influence and prestige. Soft power strategies were used by different nation-states, and by supranational and nonstate actors, that wanted to gain influence on the international stage.Soft Power Beyond the Nation takes a distinct approach to the study of soft power in history, moving beyond the framework of the nation-state. The volume editors use "soft power" to refer to the processes through which persuasion, the search for influence and power, and public opinion converge in the international arena. The book is organized on the basis of three central themes: the transnational circulation of knowledge and strategies of public diplomacy across borders, collaboration of intermediary actors of soft power whose interests did not always coincide with those of the state, and the role played by nonnational identities, such as gender and race, in soft power. Soft Power Beyond the Nation enriches the historiographical study of soft power, broadening its temporal and spatial scope and refreshing it with new perspectives on transnationalism, gender, and race. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of history and international relations.

Explores the concept of 'resilience' by proposing that it is a contested idea, susceptible to criticism, and not a predetermined notion whose consequences are fixed."Resilience" is all around us. It is a buzzword in domains that range from engineering, through moral psychology, coaching and self-help manuals, to military strategy. The word has varied meaning across these fields, but all definitions share the idea that it accounts for the protection and maintenance of different environments through the adaptation of its individuals to the changes or disruptions these might undergo. The apparently obvious meaning of resilience and its normative consequences are the result of a series of intellectual, social and epistemic processes. Resilience and the Humanities: Critique and Testing proposes that, regardless of its ubiquity, resilience is a concept that cannot be accepted without interrogating and testing its value, thereby contesting and critiquing it.This edited volume explores the possibilities and shortcomings of the concept through philosophy, literature, history and film studies in fifteen chapters that seek to understand the promises and limitations of resilience through different case studies. The authors discuss the way the concept fills a discourse with ideas that have consequences upon subjects and bodies on a social, cultural and political level. An overall view of these different approaches to resilience allows this collection to establish the multivocal nature of the concept when used in different disciplines. Put simply, there is a multiplicity of ways in which the concept of resilience can be applied across the humanities. This book is available as Open Access under the Creative Commons license CC BY-NC-ND.
