The overturning of Roe v Wade makes the ethical consideration of abortion more important than ever. Appealing to reason rather than religious belief, this book is the most comprehensive case against the choice of abortion yet published. This third edition of The Ethics of Abortion critically evaluates all the major grounds for denying basic rights to fetal human beings, including the views of those who defend not only abortion but also post-birth abortion. It also provides several (non-theological) justifications for the conclusion that all human beings, including those in utero, should be respected as persons. This book also critiques the view that abortion is not wrong even if the human fetus is a person. The Ethics of Abortion examines hard cases for those who are prolife, such as abortion in cases of rape or in order to save the woman''s life, as well as hard cases for defenders of abortion, such as sex selection abortion and the rationale for being "personally opposed" but publicly supportive of abortion. It concludes with a discussion of whether artificial wombs might end the abortion debate. Answering the arguments of defenders of abortion, this book provides reasoned justification for the view that all intentional abortions are ethically wrong and that doctors and nurses who object to abortion should not be forced to act against their consciences.
Updates and Revisions to the Third Edition Include:
Discusses Achas Burin’s 2014 essay, "Beyond Pragmatism: Defending the ‘Bright Line’ of Birth" in chapter 3 Incorporates into chapter 8 David Boonin’s cogently argued 2019 book, Beyond Roe: Why Abortion Should be Legal – Even if the Fetus is a Person Expands chapter 9 to examine tragic cases in which prenatal diagnosis determines with certainty that a fetus will die shortly after birth Includes an updated and expanded section in chapter 11 on recent debates about conscience protections Considers in chapter 12 recent arguments that parents have a right to kill if the product of conception is in an artificial womb Updates statistics on numbers of abortions in the United States, including corrections to statistics that were once thought true but are now known as erroneous Updated bibliography866 kr

Is faith just wishful thinking, or can belief in God stand up to reason? In Is Belief Believable?, Christopher Kaczor challenges the idea that faith and reason are incompatible. Drawing from philosophy, theology, and psychology, Kaczor offers clear and compelling arguments that address skepticism head-on. Whether you’re wrestling with doubts, seeking answers to life’s biggest questions, or looking to strengthen your understanding of faith, this book provides a thoughtful and accessible guide to the rational foundations of belief and the removal of obstacles to belief. In Is Belief Believable?, Kaczor presents a bold and intellectually satisfying promise: Belief in God is not only a matter of faith; it’s a rationally defensible proposition. For anyone who has wrestled with questions of faith because of skepticism and materialism, this book offers a roadmap back to belief, especially for those challenged by the New Atheism of Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris. Kaczor tackles major impediments to faith and reveals their inherent contradictions, as well as explaining how philosophical reasoning is compatible with faith. From first principles to belief in the biblical God, Kaczor builds a ladder of robust arguments with insights from philosophers, theologians, and intellectuals, including:
Aristotle’s principle of noncontradictionThomas Aquinas’s five ways to prove God’s existenceEleonore Stump’s narrative answer to the problem of evilJordan Peterson’s analysis of the psychological significance of the BibleC. S. Lewis’s explanation of the life of Christ as more than a mythWith decades of teaching experience and a rich academic background, philosophy professor Kaczor draws on his conversations with renowned thinkers like Peter Kreeft, Alasdair MacIntyre, and Jordan Peterson to craft a book that is both profound and practical. Is Belief Believable? stands apart as a must-read for anyone eager to explore the intersection of reason and revelation, offering fresh insights and timeless wisdom for those who seek to make belief more than just a matter of faith.Whether you’re a devout Catholic, a lapsed believer, or simply someone who enjoys exploring the depths of human reason and divine mystery, this book will be a transformative read that equips you to both challenge your own doubts and confidently engage in meaningful conversations about faith and reason.

This audiobook features opening arguments followed by two rounds of reply between two moral philosophers on opposing sides of the abortion debate. In the opening essays, Kate Greasley and Christopher Kaczor lay out what they take to be the best case for and against abortion rights. In the ensuing dialogue, they engage with each other’s arguments, and each responds to criticisms fielded by the other. Their conversational argument explores such fundamental questions as:
What gives a person the right to life?
Is abortion bad for women?
What is the difference between abortion and infanticide?
Underpinned by philosophical reasoning and methodology, this audiobook provides opposing and clearly structured perspectives on a highly emotive and controversial issue. The result gives listeners a window into how moral philosophers argue about the contentious issue of abortion rights, and an in-depth analysis of the compelling arguments on both sides.
