The world’s leading researchers on human behavior and decision-making equip us with the knowledge, tools, and techniques to become better decision makers—and ultimately improve the world around us—in this powerful guide that builds on the insights of the influential bestseller Nudge. When it appeared in 2008, the surprise bestseller Nudge showed how a nudge—a prompt, encouragement, or signal that suggests a behavior—could help us make better decisions. Nudge became “a beacon for using behavioral science to guide decisions and policies,” according to David Halpern. But over the past eighteen years, that “beacon” has evolved. Where nudges led us to make better decisions, boosts now help us become better decision-makers.Nudges accept our natural tendencies or biases and work to shift our behavior in the moment. Boosts, by contrast, enhance our ability to reflect, decide, or achieve something that matters. An app that prompts a moment of thought before we open a social media feed to doomscroll is a boost. So is teaching kids to stop and think—rather than fight—in moments of disagreement.Boosts are designed to make us better decision makers in every part of our lives. Leading behavioural researchers David Halpern and Elisabeth Costa have run more than 1,000 experiments and interventions across more than seventy countries that show how behavioral science can improve our capacity to make better decisions, bolster our economies, improve our relationships, and harness tech to do good rather than harm. Boost pairs their rigorous scientific findings with a compelling range of stories, to reveal:How boosts can help us be better bullshit detectorsHow a boost led to a reduction in urban violenceHow asking about pizza and sports boosted a billion-dollar tutoring program’s successHow a daring experiment at the world’s biggest social media company boosted its users into shapers of the platform and its rulesBoost puts humans back in the driver’s seat, empowering them to regain agency so they can shape—rather than be manipulated by—the forces around them. Boost equips us with knowledge, tools and techniques to boost our own decision-making, and shows how we can shape the world around us to make it easier for everyone to choose well. Against the backdrop of rapidly evolving AI, Boost ultimately asks us to make the biggest choice of all: to decide what kind of humans we want to be.

The concept of 'social capital' is currently the focus of an explosion of interest in the research and policy community. It refers to the social networks, informal structures and norms that facilitate individual and collective action. This explosion of interest is driven by a growing body of evidence that social capital has enormous effects on economic growth, health, crime and even the effectiveness and functioning of governments. David Halpern provides a guide through the many and sometimes confusing definitions of social capital. The various literatures examining the empirical consequences of social capital are brought together from across academic disciplines to demonstrate a remarkable range of effects. A model is then presented to account for the causal pathways that create social capital, and that lead from social capital to its outcomes. International evidence is used to establish whether social capital is on the decline, and the thorny question of whether social capital can harm or exclude is also examined. Finally, the policy implications are considered, including how social capital can be measured, created and utilized. Social Capital offers an overview of one of the most important and exciting areas to emerge out of the social sciences in many years. It assumes no previous knowledge of the literature or statistics, and will be of interest to students and researchers in politics, sociology, social administration and social psychology and to the general reader interested in finding out more about how social capital affects all our lives.

Richer nations are happier, yet economic growth doesn't increase happiness. This paradox is explained by the Hidden Wealth of Nations - the extent to which citizens get along with other independently drives both economic growth and well-being. Much of this hidden wealth is expressed in everyday ways, such as our common values, the way we look after our children and elderly, or whether we trust and help strangers. It is a hidden dimension of inequality, and helps to explain why governments have found it so hard to reduce gaps in society. There are also deep cracks in this hidden wealth, in the form of our rising fears of crime, immigration and terror.Using a rich variety of international comparisons and new analysis, the book explores what is happening in contemporary societies from value change to the changing role of governments, and offers suggestions about what policymakers and citizens can do about it.

This text explores the relationship between the planned or built environment and the occurrence of mental ill-health. It begins by providing a broad overview of what is known about the causes of psychopathic behaviour. It then goes on to discuss the issues that arise when attempting to identify: the impact of the environment as a source of stress; the effects that the environment can have on the quality of relationships between people; and the relationship between symbolic aspects of the environment, the planning process and mental health. The book uses analysis and case studies drawn from the UK and US and contains example illustrations of the built environment.

Since its introduction in 1984, MATLAB's ever-growing popularity and functionality have secured its position as an industry-standard software package. The user-friendly, interactive environment of MATLAB 6.x, which includes a high-level programming language, versatile graphics capabilities, and abundance of intrinsic functions, helps users focus on their applications rather than on programming errors. MATLAB has now leapt far ahead of FORTRAN as the software of choice for engineering applications.

The topic of “Neurotheology” has garnered increasing attention in the academic, religious, scientific, and popular worlds. However, there have been no attempts at exploring more specifically how Jewish religious thought and experience may intersect with neurotheology. The Rabbi’s Brain engages this groundbreaking area. Topics included relate to a neurotheological approach to the foundational beliefs that arise from the Torah and associated scriptures, Jewish learning, an exploration of the different elements of Judaism (i.e. reform, conservative, and orthodox), an exploration of specifically Jewish practices (i.e. Davening, Sabbath, Kosher), and a review of Jewish mysticism. The Rabbi’s Brain engages these topics in an easy to read style and integrates the scientific, religious, philosophical, and theological aspects of the emerging field of neurotheology. By reviewing the concepts in a stepwise, simple, yet thorough discussion, readers regardless of their background, will be able to understand the complexities and breadth of neurotheology from the Jewish perspective. More broadly, issues will include a review of the neurosciences and neuroscientific techniques; religious and spiritual experiences; theological development and analysis; liturgy and ritual; epistemology, philosophy, and ethics; and social implications, all from the Jewish perspective.
