Examples and strategies for partnering with volunteers in maritime heritage researchThis volume is the first to address the ways maritime archaeologists have engaged citizen scientists, presenting examples of projects and organizations that have involved volunteers in the important work of gathering and processing data. With a special focus on program development and sustainability, these practical case studies provide reference points for archaeologists looking to design their own citizen science projects. In these essays, contributors describe initiatives such as the Diver-Archaeological Reconnaissance Cooperative (DivARC), which involves combat veterans in meaningful research missions; Diving With a Purpose, which trains adults and youth in documenting and preserving African slave trade shipwrecks; and classroom education that encourages high school students to develop an interest in the field. As volunteers learn the scope, goals, and outcomes of their research, these studies show, they are empowered to become active participants—and true partners—in scientific inquiry.Throughout the wide range of experiences represented here, the chapter authors discuss challenges they encountered as well as ideas for optimizing future projects and strategies for welcoming diverse communities to this work. Arguing that these initiatives will create space for public engagement in heritage research, management, and preservation, Citizen Science in Maritime Archaeology serves as a foundation for discussion of this goal.Contributors: Della A. Exploring the changing meanings and future development of public engagement in maritime heritage researchBuilding on the practical case studies presented in Citizen Science in Maritime Archaeology: The Power of Public Engagement, this second volume delves into evolving definitions and applications of citizen science, offering fresh insights into community engagement, research ethics, and inclusivity. Through new case studies, Citizen Science in Maritime Archaeology: Terminology, Theory, and Infrastructure demonstrates what citizen science means for communities: it can foster a preservation ethic and enable community members to contribute to research that informs policy change on topics as diverse as climate change and maritime tourism. These chapters also address the theoretical underpinnings and inclusive potential of citizen participation and suggest public-focused research strategies for future projects. Each chapter's thorough and actionable analysis of actual projects encourages readers to consider shortcomings in the ways citizen science is conducted and to reflect on how the practice can be adapted or updated within the field of maritime archaeology. This volume is a valuable resource for professionals, scholars, students, and volunteers interested in the transformative potential of citizen science.Contributors: Mark Stephens Nicole Bucchino Grinnan Massimiliano Secci Jay V. Take to the sea on this maritime archaeological exploration of nineteenth-century American whaling shipsAmerican whaleships of the early nineteenth century were more than ocean-going vessels—they were complex workplaces, designed for long-term voyages, round-the-clock labor, and the large-scale extraction of marine resources. In Wrecked on the Reef, maritime archaeologist Jason T. Raupp presents a pioneering study of these ships as mobile production platforms, rooted in the logic of industrial capitalism operating far from land.Drawing on shipwreck sites from the central Pacific region, Raupp offers a rare archaeological look at everyday life aboard nineteenth-century whaling vessels during the so-called "Golden Age" of whaling. He examines the tools used to hunt and process whales, the strict labor hierarchies onboard, and the physical evidence of diverse, often vulnerable crews who lived and worked under demanding conditions. By combining maritime and industrial archaeology, Raupp reveals how these ships functioned not just as transportation, but as full-scale factories at sea.Chapters trace the rise of Pacific whaling, the importance of Hawaii as a supply and repair hub, the design and mechanics of whaleships, and the dangerous work crews performed in extreme isolation. Raupp shows how these ships were not only technological marvels of their time, but also part of a much larger system of labor, risk, and ocean-based resource extraction that fueled American expansion into the Pacific.By exploring whaleships as floating work sites, Raupp offers readers a deeper understanding of maritime labor, capitalism, and imperialism in the nineteenth century. Wrecked on the Reef charts a new course in the study of labor and landscape at sea, providing significant contributions to maritime archaeology, industrial history, and environmental humanities.

Wrecked on the Reef explores the history of American deep-water whaling ships in the Pacific Ocean during the 'Golden Age' of whaling (1815–1860). The narrative brings readers into the heart of preparing for voyages and daily routines, from outfitting of the vessels, meals, recreation, and healthcare, to details of the hunt, the processing of the whale parts, and the duties and status of the sailors on board. Numerous photographs of archaeological finds from submerged shipwrecks complement the history of the industrial nature of the workplaces.
