Zionism and the Creation of a New Society is the history of the development of the Jewish State from the early idea of Jewish nationalism. Ranging from the Zionist movements in the late nineteenth century to the establishment of Israel in 1948, this study clearly demonstrates the continuity between the principles and practices of those early movements and the social and political structure of Israel today. Israel is a modern state whose institutions were clearly shaped by an ideological movement. The declaration of independence in 1948 was an immediate expression of the fundamental Zionist idea: it gave effect to a plan advocated by organized Zionists since the 1880s for solving the Jewish Problem. This innovative empirical study examines written examples of antisemitism in contemporary Germany. Beginning with his childhood in Belorussia and concluding with his tenure as president, Reinharz and Golani describe how a Russian Jew, who immigrated to the United Kingdom in the early twentieth century, was able to advance the goals of Theodor Herzl, the founder of the Zionist Organization. Weizmann is also shown as a man of human foibles—his infatuations, political machinations, and elitism—as well as a man of admirable qualities—intelligence, wit, charisma, and dedication.  Weizmann, who came to the UK to work as a biochemist, was in regular communication with British political figures, including prime ministers Arthur James Balfour, David Lloyd George, Winston Churchill, and Ramsay MacDonald. He also met presidents of the United States from Woodrow Wilson to Harry Truman. The series European-Jewish Studies reflects the international network and competence of the Moses Mendelssohn Center for European Jewish studies (MMZ). Thanks to the highly interdisciplinary character of the series, which is edited in collaboration with the Selma Stern Center for Jewish Studies Berlin-Brandenburg, particular emphasis is placed on the way in which history, the humanities and cultural sciences approach the subject, as well as on fundamental intellectual, political and religious questions that inspire Jewish life and thinking today, and have influenced it in the past.

During the second half of the 19th century a large number of Jewish popularizers in Eastern Europe took upon themselves the task of spreading knowledge of the natural sciences amongst the learned Hebrew speaking Jewish intelligentsia of Eastern Europe. This was part and parcel of the processes of enlightenment and acculturation of Jewish society and an important chapter in the revival of Hebrew culture. This group of popularizers continued this tradition of writing about scientific developments for many years and eventually their books and articles reached ever larger circles of readers eager to acquire new scientific knowledge. Many of their publications aimed to deal with the wonders of the universe and many of them described new technological inventions. Other publications tried to explain to the ever expanding circles of readers changes that have taken place during the second half of the 19th century in the fields of physics, astrophysics, chemistry, biology, physiology and more. Their publications explained to the Jewish intelligentsia such processes and terms as energy and its use, electro-magnetism, thermo-dynamics, chemical substances and much more. Often they had to invent a terminology that had not previously existed in the Hebrew lexicon. At the same time this new scientific knowledge revealed the principles and laws governing the world around them. Many of these popularizers were observant Jews and the book deals with the way they struggled with the challenge of reconciling their religious beliefs with scientific discoveries, a challenge that persisted into the twentieth century. The book describes these developments which led to the creation of the field of science in Hebrew - it is a collective biography of the ever-larger group of popularizers who opened a new field of knowledge and the manner in which they tried to explicate it to an ever-larger public
