Israel is a modern state whose institutions were clearly shaped by an ideological movement. The declaration of independence in 1948 was an immediate expression of the fundamental Zionist idea: it gave effect to a plan advocated by organized Zionists since the 1880s for solving the Jewish Problem. Thus, major Israeli political institutions, such as the party structure, embody principles and practices that were followed in the World Zionist Organization.In this respect, Israel is similar to other new states whose political institutions directly derive from the nationalist movements that won their independence. History and social structure are inseparably joined; the contemporary social problems of the new state are clearly rooted in its history, while the shape of its future is being decided by the very policies through which it is trying to solve these problems. At the same time, there are many unique aspects to the birth of Israel. The problem to be solved by acquiring sovereignty in Israel (and establishing a free Jewish society there) was the problem of a people living in exile. The first stage, therefore, was to return to the people a homeland to which they were intimately attached, not only in their dreams but in the minute details of their ways of life.This important book studies the birth of the State of Israel and analyzes the elaborately articulated and variegated ideological principles of the Zionist movement that led to that birth. Antisemitism never disappeared in Europe. In fact, there is substantial evidence that it is again on the rise, manifest in violent acts against Jews in some quarters, but more commonly noticeable in everyday discourse in mainstream European society. This innovative empirical study examines written examples of antisemitism in contemporary Germany. It demonstrates that hostility against Jews is not just a right-wing phenomenon or a phenomenon among the uneducated, but is manifest among all social classes, including intellectuals.Drawing on 14,000 letters and e-mails sent between 2002 and 2012 to the Central Council of Jews in Germany and to the Israeli embassy in Berlin, as well as communications sent between 2010 and 2011 to Israeli embassies in in Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, England, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Spain, this volume shows how language plays a crucial role in activating and re-activating antisemitism. In addition, the authors investigate the role of emotions in antisemitic argumentation patterns and analyze “anti-Israelism” as the dominant form of contemporary hatred of Jews.

During the second half of the 19th century a large number of Jewish popularizers in Eastern Europe took upon themselves the task of spreading knowledge of the natural sciences amongst the learned Hebrew speaking Jewish intelligentsia of Eastern Europe. This was part and parcel of the processes of enlightenment and acculturation of Jewish society and an important chapter in the revival of Hebrew culture. This group of popularizers continued this tradition of writing about scientific developments for many years and eventually their books and articles reached ever larger circles of readers eager to acquire new scientific knowledge. Many of their publications aimed to deal with the wonders of the universe and many of them described new technological inventions. Other publications tried to explain to the ever expanding circles of readers changes that have taken place during the second half of the 19th century in the fields of physics, astrophysics, chemistry, biology, physiology and more. Their publications explained to the Jewish intelligentsia such processes and terms as energy and its use, electro-magnetism, thermo-dynamics, chemical substances and much more. Often they had to invent a terminology that had not previously existed in the Hebrew lexicon. At the same time this new scientific knowledge revealed the principles and laws governing the world around them. Many of these popularizers were observant Jews and the book deals with the way they struggled with the challenge of reconciling their religious beliefs with scientific discoveries, a challenge that persisted into the twentieth century. The book describes these developments which led to the creation of the field of science in Hebrew - it is a collective biography of the ever-larger group of popularizers who opened a new field of knowledge and the manner in which they tried to explicate it to an ever-larger public
