Since the late twentieth century, letters in literature have seen a remarkable renaissance. The prominence of letters in recent fiction is due in part to the rediscovery, by contemporary writers, of letters as an effective tool for rendering aspects of historicity, liminality, marginalization and the expression of subjectivity vis-à-vis an ‘other’; it is also due, however, to the artistically challenging inclusion of the new electronic media of communication into fiction. While studies of epistolary fiction have so far concentrated on the eighteenth century and on thematic concerns, this volume charts the epistolary renaissance in recent literature, entering new territory by also focusing on the aesthetic implications of the epistolary mode. In particular, the essays in this volume illuminate the potential of the epistolary (including digital forms) for rendering contemporary sensitivities. The volume thus offers a comprehensive assessment of letter narratives in contemporary literature. Through its focus on the aesthetic and structural aspects of new epistolary fiction, the inclusion of various narrative forms, and the consideration of both conventional letters and their new digital kindred, The Epistolary Renaissance offers novel insight into a multi-facetted (re)new(ed) genre.

Approaching concepts of nature through a multidisciplinary lens, Nature as Resource, Aesthetic Experience, and Ecological Challenge assembles essays by scholars from the Americas, Africa, and Europe. Bringing together perspectives in philosophy, theology, literary studies, cultural ecology, art history, and the bio-sciences, the volume engages with crucial concerns regarding perceptions of nature in the Anthropocene and the increasing social and ethnic inequalities in the wake of environmental damage. The essays address aesthetic and ethical questions about nature, providing novel perspectives on representations of nature in literature and the visual and performative arts. They investigate nature as threatened by human interference and resulting issues of social (in)justice, and they explore the potential of decolonial approaches to nature. The volume treads new ground by combining expertise from a wide spectrum of research fields and cultural backgrounds, with the aim of fostering the development of new ethical principles and ways of planetary thinking. It thus adds an innovative perspective to existing discourses on ecologically sustainable forms of coexistence between human and nonhuman – or more-than-human – nature.

Green Matters
Ecocultural Functions of Literature

Green Matters offers a fascinating insight into the regenerative function of literature with regard to environmental concerns. Based on recent developments in ecocriticism, the book demonstrates how the aesthetic dimension of literary texts makes them a vital force in the struggle for sustainable futures. Applying this understanding to individual works from a number of different thematic fields, cultural contexts and literary genres, Green Matters presents novel approaches to the manifold ways in which literature can make a difference. While the first sections of the book highlight the transnational, the focus on Canada in the last section allows a more specific exploration of how themes, genres and literary forms develop their own manifestations within a national context. Through its unifying ecocultural focus and its variegated approaches, the volume is an essential contribution to contemporary environmental humanities.
