Este libro se inserta en la reflexión sobre la modernidad cultural y las identidades latinoamericanas en la transición del siglo XIX al XX. Lo hace a través de textos escasamente trabajados en las historiografías literarias, pertenecientes a cuatro intelectuales heterodoxos: el chileno Francisco Bilbao (1823-1865), el peruano Manuel González Prada (1844-1918), el argentino Manuel Ugarte (1875-1951) y el brasileño Manoel Bomfim (1868-1932).Con esta obra se vuelve a los clásicos, pero lo hace a contrapelo de ellos mismos. Es decir, se analizan textos contemporáneos a aquellas obras clásicas del siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX que, si bien convulsionaron en un primer momento las ciudades en donde aparecieron, posteriormente permanecieron en la invisibilidad de la no reedición o en el margen de las historiografías literarias. En tal sentido, la hipótesis que guía este trabajo es establecer cómo, a través de estos textos desechados, se articulan reflexiones que llevan a extremos la imaginación de una modernidad cultural latinoamericana al retar las desigualdades sobre las cuales se asentaron los cambios materiales y conceptuales que constituyeron la modernización de los estados nacionales.
