Breakdown and Breakthrough examines the essential role of regression in the patient's recovery from mental illness. In light of this Nathan Field reassesses the role of the therapist tracing psychotherapy back to its earliest spiritual roots and comparing modern analytic methods with ancient practices of healing and exorcism. The author uses vivid examples from his psychotherapeutic practice to show how, with the apparent breakdown of the therapeutic method itself, patients can break through to a new level of functioning. The book goes on to consider how psychotherapy has been affected by fundamental developments in twentieth century science, such as the move from old, classical assumptions of linear causation to non-linear complexity from reductionism to a holistic systems approach and from mental mechanisms to acknowledging the mysteries of unconscious interaction. Taking up the radical vision originally proposed by Carl Jung and later fostered by eminent psychotherapists such as Winnicott and Bion, the author shows how psychotherapy can be reframed to admit the existence of a psychological fourth dimension. Nathan Field reappraises ideas of health and pathology, psychoanalysis and healing, sex and spirituality in light of a dramatic shift in the way we understand ourselves. How this shift alters the shape of psychotherapy in the twenty-first century is the challenge the practitioners, teachers and trainees must all address.

The Fatal Dowry is a Jacobean play co-written by Philip Massinger and Nathan Field, likely composed around 1619, although it was not published until 1632. It showcases a collaboration that reflects both authors' distinctive styles, with Massinger contributing the more rhetorical and forensic scenes, while Field adds naturalistic dialogue, particularly for the character of Young Novall. The play follows the themes of honor, loyalty, and infidelity, exploring the tragic consequences of misplaced trust and the pursuit of justice. The character of Charalois, the noble and honorable protagonist, is caught in a morally complex situation when his wife, Beaumelle, betrays him with Young Novall. The play is marked by lengthy rhetorical debates and trial scenes, characteristic of Massinger's work, though Field's influence in the more colloquial exchanges provides a balance to the otherwise heavy discourse. The play's structure includes a mix of moral and dramatic action, with Charalois's unwavering commitment to honor leading him to take the law into his own hands, culminating in a trial and the eventual death of both Beaumelle and Young Novall. While The Fatal Dowry initially appeared as a full play in 1632, it had a notable afterlife in the 18th century, with adaptations like Rowe's The Fair Penitent becoming extremely popular. Although it hasn't seen modern stage productions, its thematic concerns with honor, the consequences of infidelity, and the moral consequences of personal judgment remain relevant. The play, like many of Massinger's works, emphasizes the conflict between public duty and personal emotions, exploring how characters' actions are often driven by abstract notions of honor, duty, and loyalty. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1969.

This volume is a much-needed exploration of contemporary theories on psychotherapy and spirituality, moving away from the more traditional, non-spiritual aspects of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. The book consists of a dialogue between the opposing sides; most of the papers have responses from the "other" side. This dialogue mirrors the early communication between Freud and Jung regarding spirituality, and opens up doors for continuing collaboration between psychoanalysis as a pure science and the spiritual and religious dimensions within. This inspiring collection of papers grew from the lectures held in 2002 at the London Centre for Psychotherapy. In the time of increased interest in more scientific schools of psychoanalysis such as neuropsycho-analysis, there is also a surge of interest in spirituality within psychoanalysis, as demonstrated by the great interest in these lectures.
