The Oxford Handbook of Digital Classical Studies offers three distinct views: (1) an expansive approach to classical studies, which encompasses sub-disciplines that are usually treated separately, such as archaeology and philology; (2) concise overviews of the various digital tools, methods, and approaches currently in use; and (3) an exploration of their uses in and beyond academia, taking in research, pedagogy and heritage. As well as giving a sense of what is now possible, the handbook places digital technology within a theoretical framework that examines its use critically, advocates for ethical practices in the production and management of data, and considers its impact on the material and digital world. The handbook is divided into four sections that: sketch out the historiography of the field and articulate the impact that the digital turn has had on classical studies (Section II: Contexts); explore the importance that digitization and data management plays in shaping the field (Section III: Data); provide concise and up-to-date introductions to new digital methods and approaches (Section IV: Methods); and present a selection of case studies that exemplify how these can be used in various sectors as a source of inspiration for readers (Section V: Case Studies).

Sanctuaries were at the heart of Greek religious, social, political, and cultural life, however, we have a limited understanding of how sanctuary spaces, politics, and rituals intersected in the Greek cities of the Hellenistic and Republican periods. This edited collection focuses on the archaeological material of this era and how it can elucidate the complex relationship between the various forces operating on, and changing the physical space of, sanctuaries. Material such as archaeological remains, sculptures, and inscriptions provides us with concrete evidence of how sanctuaries functioned as locations of memory in a social environment dominated by the written word, and gives us insight into political choices and decisions. It also reveals changes unrecorded in surviving local or political histories. Each case study explored by this volume's contributors employs archaeology as the primary means of investigation: from art-historical approaches, to surveys and fieldwork, to re-evaluation of archival material. Hellenistic Sanctuaries represents a significant contribution to the existing bibliography on ancient Greek religion, history, and archaeology, and provides new ways of thinking about politics, rituals, and sanctuary spaces in Greece.

In this volume, Bobou offers a systematic analysis of ancient Greek statues of children from the sanctuaries, houses, and necropoleis of the Hellenistic world in order to understand their function and meaning. Comparing images of children in reliefs, terracotta figurines, and marble statutes, she shows that children and childhood became more prominent in the visual material record from the late fifth century BC, a time during which children became a matter of parental and state concern. Looking at the literary and epigraphical evidence, Bobou argues that statues of children were important for transmitting civic values to future citizens, serving as paradigms of behaviour and standing testament to the strength and future of a community. Created by adults, the statues reveal much about adult ideology and values during this period, and the expectations and hopes placed on children. The combination of iconographic studies and examination of the original locations in which statues were placed highlights the importance of children in Hellenistic society as well as their connection with specific areas of civic and social life.
