Many diseases have the potential to affect the brain. This is true of chronic diseases (e.g., diabetes, heart disease), infectious diseases (e.g., COVID-19, HIV), pre-disease states (e.g., hypertension, obesity), and specific traumatic events (e.g., concussion, stroke). On the other hand, neurodegenerative conditions and some psychiatric disorders are largely understood to be diseases of the brain itself. It is therefore quite natural to think about the brain as an outcome variable in relation to physical and psychiatric illness. However, it is also possible to consider the brain as a mechanism by which a disease may impact an entirely different outcome of interest, or even as a predictor of disease onset itself. Importantly, these effects may be revealed only under certain environmental conditions, and so the social context of behavior, illness and health are all important to consider. Social Neuroscience of Disease Prevention examines the role of the human brain in health and disease from the above multi-perspective framework, wherein the brain can be a predictor, mediator or outcome of physical and psychiatric illness. Importantly, the social context is examined carefully as a potential moderator of all of these effects, and the rate at which they occur. This book is written with a narrative style that is intended to prioritize readability, self-reflection and critical thought, more so than a pure computational or technical focus. It is appropriate for scientists and trainees from a wide variety of backgrounds, including the medical sciences, the neurosciences, allied health sciences and public health.

For over one hundred years, the British economy has been in decline relative to other industrialized countries. This book explores the origins of Britain's economic problems and develops a striking new argument about the sources of decline. It goes on to analyze the evolution of economic policy in postwar Britain from the development of Keynesianism to the rise of monetarism under Margaret Thatcher. Septins are an evolutionarily conserved group of GTP-binding and filament-forming proteins that were originally discovered in yeast. Once the preserve of a small band of yeast biologists, the field has grown rapidly in the past few years and now encompasses the whole of animal and fungal biology. Furthermore, septins are nowadays recognized to be involved in a variety of disease processes from neoplasia to neurodegenerative conditions.
This book comprehensively examines the septin gene family and their proteins, providing those new to this research area with a detailed and wide ranging introduction to septin biology. It starts with a unique historical perspective on the development of the field, from its beginnings in the screen for cell division mutants by the Nobel Laureate Lee Hartwell. The evolution of the septin gene family then forms a basis for consideration of the biochemistry and functions of septins in yeast and other model organisms including C. elegans and Drosophila.

This Element documents long-term changes in the political attitudes of occupational groups, shifts in the salience of economic and cultural issues, and the movement of political parties in the electoral space from 1990 to 2018 in eight Western democracies. We evaluate prominent contentions about how electoral contestation has changed and why support for mainstream parties has declined while support for challenger parties has increased. We contribute a new analysis of how the viability of the types of electoral coalitions assembled by center-left, center-right, radical-right, and Green parties changes over these decades. We find that their viability is affected by changes over time in citizens' attitudes to economic and cultural issues and shifts in the relative salience of those issues. We examine the contribution these developments make to declining support for mainstream center-left and center-right coalitions and increasing support for coalitions underpinning radical-right and Green parties.
