Queer in Europe takes stock of the intellectual and social status and treatment of queer in the New Europe of the twenty-first century, addressing the ways in which the Anglo-American term and concept 'queer' is adapted in different national contexts, where it takes on subtly different overtones, determined by local political specificities and intellectual traditions. Bringing together contributions by carefully chosen experts, this book explores key aspects of queer in a range of European national contexts, namely: Belgium, Cyprus, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, The Nordic Region, The Netherlands, Poland, Russia and Spain. Rather than prescribing a universalizing definition, the book engages with a wide spectrum of what is meant by 'queer', as each chapter negotiates the contested border between direct queer activist action based on identity categories, and more plural queer strategies that call these categories into question. The first volume in English devoted to the exploration of queer in Europe, this book makes an important intervention in contemporary queer studies.

As the field of translation studies has developed, translators and translation scholars have become more aware of the unacknowledged ideologies inherent both in texts themselves and in the mechanisms that affect their circulation. This book both analyses the translation of queerness and applies queer thought to issues of translation. It sheds light on the manner in which heteronormative societies influence the selection, reading and translation of texts and pays attention to the means by which such heterosexism might be subverted. It considers the ways in which queerness can be repressed, ignored or made invisible in translation, and shows how translations might expose or underline the queerness – or the homophobic implications – of a given text. Balancing the theoretical with the practical, this book investigates what is culturally at stake when particular texts are translated from one culture to another, raising the question of the relationship between translation, colonialism and globalization. It also takes the insights derived from intercultural translation studies and applies them to other fields of cultural criticism. The first multi-focus, in-depth study on translating queer, translating queerly and queering translation, this book will be of interest to scholars working in the fields of gender and sexuality, queer theory and queer studies, literature, film studies and translation studies.

«Offering a range of insightful readings of texts by Honigmann, this volume is engaging and compelling. It will resonate strongly with those readers familiar with Honigmann, deepening their understanding of her work, and will constitute, for others, an urgent invitation to explore her challenging, affecting, and humane œuvre further.»(Professor Emily Jeremiah, Royal Holloway, University of London)«Barbara Honigmann is one of the most incisive and engaging Jewish authors writing in German today. This collection of original essays, many of which illuminate the Jewish dimension of her texts, offers a superb introduction to the writer and raises the analysis of her work to new levels.»(Katja Garloff, Professor of German and Humanities, Reed College)This is the first full-length book in English devoted to the work of one of the most widely read and intriguing contemporary German-language writers. Barbara Honigmann, born in East Berlin in 1949 and a resident of Strasbourg since 1986, treats the major themes of our time from the special perspective of a practising Jewish woman. Her seemingly simple language navigates and reveals hidden complexities, an effect mirrored in her masterly use of form. This book covers Honigmann’s entire œuvre, from her first breakthrough success to her most recent collection of essays and speeches. It includes detailed accounts of form and style, as well as wide-ranging discussions of themes and contexts. Approaching Honigmann’s work from a variety of angles, including aesthetic analysis, feminist and memory studies, the literary exploration of space, and the investigation of autofiction, the essays collected here discuss Honigmann’s unique voice and her treatment of identity and belonging, Jewishness across generations, migration and multiculturalism, postmemory and trauma, language and transcendence. The academic chapters in this volume are complemented by Honigmann’s translation of an installation text by Chantal Akerman, an interview the book’s editors conducted with the author in December 2021, and an extensive bibliography.

Georg Büchner: Contemporary Perspectives examines the continuing relevance of Büchner in the early twenty-first century in terms of politics, science, philosophy, aesthetics, cultural studies and performance studies. It situates Büchner’s interdisciplinary work in relation to the philosophical, scientific and religious discourses of his time, while also investigating the ways in which Büchner’s intersectional writings anticipated – sometimes uncannily – questions and problems which were to become central concerns in modernism and after. The nineteen essays in the book, some in English and some in German, uniquely combine close readings of individual passages and images with wide-ranging intertextual comparisons, linking Büchner to more than twenty-five writers, thinkers and theoreticians from his time and ours.

This volume presents a cross-section of current Brecht studies, reflecting a variety of approaches and perspectives ranging from detailed exegesis of particular texts to cultural criticism in the broadest sense. It provides analyses of Brecht's work and investigates his pervasive influence in 20th century literature. The studies collected here cover the whole of Brecht’s career, from the early one-acter Kleinbürgerhochzeit of 1919 to the Sinn und Form years immediately preceding his death, as well as his use of tradition and his legacy. By way of redressing a tendency in Brecht reception to regard him mainly as a dramatist, the volume covers novels, poetry, film, photography, journalism and theory as well as plays.
