The way organizations manage their value chain has changed dramatically over the past decade. Today, organizations take account of economic issues, but they also adopt a broader perspective of their purpose including social and environmental issues. Yet despite its global spread, sustainable value chain management remains an uncertain and poorly defined ambition, with few absolutes. The social and environmental issues that organizations should address easily can be interpreted as including virtually everything. Current literature on the topic seeks to understand the effects and management of initiatives dealing with diversity, human rights, safety, philanthropy, community, and environment. However, the penetration of social and environmental considerations into value chain management is described as €desire lacking reality€ thereby making the idea a patchy success. The objective of this research anthology is to investigate different angles of sustainable value chain management. The book€s 27 chapters fill holes and explore new fields; the chapters are organised in five sections: Sustainable value chains - context, drivers, and barriers; Sustainable value chains - managing activities; Sustainable value chains - managing networks and collaboration; Sustainable value chains - integrative perspectives; and Sustainable value chains - specific sectorial and industry perspectives.

The corporate social and environmental responsibility movement, known more generally as corporate responsibility (CR), shows little sign of waning. Almost all large corporations now run some form of corporate responsibility program. Despite this widespread belief that CR can simultaneously improve societal welfare and corporate performance, most companies are largely in the dark when it comes to understanding how their stakeholders think and feel about these programs. This book argues that all companies must understand how and why stakeholders react to such information about companies and their actions. It examines the two most important stakeholder groups to companies - consumers and employees - to comprehend why, when and how they react to CR. Armed with this insight, it shows how companies can maximize the value of their CR initiatives by fostering strong stakeholder relationships to develop, implement and evaluate compelling social responsibility programs that generate value for both the company and its stakeholders.

The essays in this book examine critically the various issues concerning law enforcement and human rights. The author has drawn on his rich and varied experience of working for nearly four decades as a law enforcement officer in different capacities and as the Director General of the National Human Rights Commission. Revealing an alert, analytical and sensitive mind with deep concern and compassion for the disadvantaged victims of human rights violations, Sen provides a deep insight into the problems of policing a democratic society, besides discussing corruption, cyber crimes, crime prevention through community policing and police accountability as well as civilian oversight.

Bacteriology, the branch of biology devoted to the study of bacteria- Bacteriologists are concerned with the structure and functions of bacteria, with the environmental conditions that affect bacterial growth, with the effects of bacteria on the other organisms, and with the uses for bacteria. Bacteriology is important in medicine, public health and sanitation work, agriculture, food-processing, and industry. There are many branches of this science, each dealing with special problems that have arisen from the complex effects that bacteria have upon civilization. The relation of bacteria to disease has given rise to the sciences of pathologic bacteriology (conceming treatment and causes of disease),immunology (concerning immunity to disease), antiseptic surgery veterinary bacteriology, and sanitary bacteriology. The book is intended as a reference book for practical classes of under-graduate and postgraduate students for studying bacterial diseases of plants. The book covers basic and applied aspects of the subject. Contents: introduction; Diversity of Metabolism in Prokaryotes; The Norma! Bacterial Flora of Humans; Epidemiology; principles of Diagnosis; Nutrition and Cultivation of Bacteria; Nutrition and Growth of Bacteria; Staphylococcus.

Biochemistry governs all living organisms and living processes. By controlling information flow through biochemical signalling and the flow of chemical energy through metabolism, biochemical processes give rise to the incredible complexity of life. As our understanding of how various agents can cause harm to humans and other organisms, a more descriptive definition of toxicology is "the study of the adverse effects of chemicals or physical agents on living organisms". Laccases exhibit an extraordinary natural substrate range (phenols, polyphenols, anilines, aryl diamines, methoxy-substituted phenols, hydroxyindols, benzenethiols, inorganic/organic metal compounds and many others) which is the major reason for their attractiveness for dozens of biotechnological applications. Moreover, in the presence of small molecules, known as redox mediators, laccases enhance their substrate specificity. Indeed, laccase oxidizes the mediator and the generated radical oxidizes the substrate by mechanisms different from the enzymatic one, enabling the oxidative transformation of substrates with high redox potentials-otherwise not oxidized by the enzyme. The industrial applicability of laccase may therefore be extended by the use of a laccase-mediator system (LMS).
