An ethnographic study of how the political was configured among controversial post-conflict Northern Irish marching bandsIn Music and Noise, anthropologist Sean French examines the practice of controversial Protestant parading in postconflict Northern Ireland, as well as the broader political movement of Loyalism. Protestant parading continues to be a point of contention due to its raucous street commemorations of historical battles won by Protestants over Catholics. Parading has been variously described as triumphalist political hatred by its opponents and apolitical culture by its proponents. However, refraining from common categorizations of parading as straightforwardly political or apolitically "e;cultural,"e; French instead asks: political in what way?As an anthropologist with a Belfast Irish Catholic background, French encountered both warmth and occasional hostility as he joined Protestant marching bands and learned their instruments. He charts the development of a growing "e;articulate"e; style of Loyalism, its interplay with the embodied intensity of marching band community representation, and the increasingly semiplayful semiserious tone that acts of intercommunal antagonism take in Northern Ireland. French's unique position enabled him to reflect on the nature of modern-day sectarianism and ethnopolitical antagonism and to question how possible it is to really know another person's true beliefs. As a result, this book does not apologize for the more destructive elements of Loyalism but instead offers a more nuanced take on a group who are otherwise often stereotyped as hyperpolitical. Ultimately, by combining ethnography with historical context, Music and Noise offers an in-depth view of what motivates Loyalists to continue to march in modern-day Northern Ireland.

Made on a low budget, The Terminator was one of the most influential films of the 1980s. Combining explosive special effects and an intricate time-travel plot, it set Arnold Schwarzenegger on the road to superstardom and allowed its director, James Cameron, to go on to make some of the most expensive films of all time. The Terminator quickly found a cult following who appreciated its deadpan humour, comic-book violence and elaborate variations on standard science fiction themes. Resolutely populist, accomplished and instantly memorable, The Terminator has dramatically outlived its humble beginnings. Sean French’s insightful study traces the film’s production history, its sources and the extent of its influence. He argues that The Terminator’s visual flair, stylised acting and choreographed violence are so compelling not so much because they offer intellectual rewards but because they traffic in the darker, more visceral pleasures of moviegoing. In his foreword to this new edition, Sean French reflects on Terminator sequels and reboots, suggesting that the original film has more in common with the gritty visions of the New Hollywood than present-day action blockbusters.

Notes from the Dream House is a `best of’ selection of reviews by the celebrated Observer film critic Philip French. Spanning half the history of cinema, his reviews cover a great variety of films, from westerns and gangsters to art movies and musicals – the hits and the misses, the good, the bad and the ugly. French takes on films as disparate as The Gospel According to St Matthew and Ted, The Remains of the Day and Caligula. His reviews are personal, witty, and sharply perceptive. Time and again he reveals not only an encyclopaedic knowledge of cinema but also an erudition, an enthusiasm, and a boundless curiosity. Taken together, they form an illuminating commen¬tary on modern culture; but above all they are a distillation of one man’s lifelong love of cinema, a worthy memorial to one of the most respected and beloved of modern critics.
