This book discusses the association between ecological and social determinants and suicidal behavior. Suicidal behavior is an extremely complex human behavior. It is an outcome of complex interactions among multiple factors like gene and environment, biopsychosocial, proximal and distal factors. Several risk factors such as psychiatric disorders, life events, social deprivation, personality traits and disorders, and substance abuse have been identified even though those vary based on culture, time, country, and methods of assessment. In recent times, evidence has shown associations among ecological variables like the human development index, the income of the country, the GINI index, educational attainment, the green environment, climate change, and suicidal behavior. At the same time, there are interlinked confounding variables that challenge the findings. Given the lack of literature discussing these findings, this book seeks to compare and contrast the ecological aspects and suicidal behavior holistically.

This book is about public mental health needs and aspects of substance use disorders in South Asian countries. South Asia consists of eight countries with low- and middle-income backgrounds. The people of this region, with a combined population of around 2 billion, share common cultures, beliefs, and behavioral patterns regarding physical and mental health. Among them, more than 66 million people use different forms of substances including cannabis, opium and opiates, amphetamine, and prescription drugs. Substance abuse brings deadly consequences. It affects almost all spheres of life, i.e., personal, social, recreational, criminal, and family aspects; both physical and mental health; and economy of the society as well as the country. Advanced management and holistic prevention are public health priorities. However, very little attention has been paid to the issues as a region as well as in countries like Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Hence, the editors of this book aimed to publish a book that discusses the public mental health and healthcare issues related to substance use disorder in a densely populated low- and middle-income setting.

Dhat Syndrome is known as a culture-bound syndrome in South Asia. People with Dhat Syndrome often present with anxiety and distress related to semen loss. Multiple somatic and sexual symptoms often accompany this. The symptoms of Dhat Syndrome closely resemble other neurotic and stress-related disorders. Myths related to sexuality are often the core phenomenon in dhat syndrome, which is responsible for the generation of psychopathology—addressing the myth''s preliminary results in resolving psychopathology. However, many patients require pharmacological and psychological management. Due to strong cultural beliefs and associated myths, patients with Dhat Syndrome often reach out to traditional healers before getting the proper psychiatric consultation, further consolidating their myths and poor attitude toward treatment. However, Dhat Syndrome resembles a male entity; a similar entity is reported in females, where females attribute their non-pathological vaginal discharge to psychological distress. The pattern of symptoms has a significant resemblance with Dhat Syndrome in males. There is no standard book that exclusively discusses various aspects of Dhat Syndrome. This book examines the evolution of Dhat Syndrome to the current understanding of the disease and its management. Hence, this book will be unique and helpful for this disorder.
