Critical Multicultural Perspectives on Whiteness Reader aims to help us rethink "race," racism, and whiteness as narratives with deep roots in the past that contribute to the current social order, and function to reproduce the social hierarchy in which we live. The reader includes several brilliant iconic essays that address the social construction of whiteness and critical resistance, as well as excellent new critical perspectives. It is a compilation that offers new and intermediate readers in critical whiteness theory a valuable and diverse overview of the subject. It also serves as a refresher to those who have themselves contributed to this field.

Whiteness is a narrative. It is the privileged dimension of the complex story of "race" that was, and continues to be, seminal in shaping the socio-economic structure and cultural climate of the United States and other Western nations. Without acknowledging this story, it is impossible to understand fully the current political and social contexts in which we live. Critical Multicultural Perspectives on Whiteness explores multiple analyses of whiteness, drawing on both past and current key sources to tell the story in a more comprehensive way. This book features both iconic essays that address the social construction of whiteness and critical resistance as well as excellent new critical perspectives.

In this book, we argue that authoritarian forces are working harder than ever to maintain, reinstate, and pass laws and policies that are antithetical to a kind, equitable, and socially just society that meets all of its citizens’ needs. American cultural hegemony—the dissemination process by which people are persuaded through laws and policies, institutional and cultural ideologies, norms, values, and practices to privilege the interests of powerful, disproportionately white, highstatus, and wealthy individuals and families—is ubiquitous. We learn to take for granted that the capitalist, social caste system in which we live, in largely segregated, racial, ethnic, and social class communities, is the best and fairest of all possible systems and just ‘the way things are.’ For example, large numbers of media and educational programs sell white supremacy, racism, social caste, sexism, and other forms of discrimination, as normal, natural, and common sense. Few schools teach children to become critically conscious of the hegemonic process by which social hierarchy in the United States has been handed down over more than four hundred years. Our research in this book names some of the above-mentioned laws, policies, and ways of framing reality that maintain the inequitable system in which we live, and silence and traumatize students, faculty, staff , and social justice activists in education and beyond. It also includes some alternative narratives being enacted by extraordinary educators, supporting collective action, critical consciousness, accountability, hope, equity, and social justice. Despite some social change, social caste continues to de- ne our lives. So, those of us who value democracy, equity, and social justice need to contribute, collectively and individually, to help our students and communities see through the gaslighting that conceals the lack of historical and current equity in our society—in other words, to recognize how cultural hegemony works to reproduce inequities.

As educators, how do we challenge and interrupt the social construction of whiteness in ourselves, in the classroom, in schools, and in the wider society? Coming from diverse backgrounds, the contributors in this volume draw on their own well-examined experiences of race, racism, and whiteness in developing effective antiracist pedagogies and classroom activities that interrupt and contest whiteness. They have explored their own lives from the selective position of their own memories and have traced the ways in which their assumptions – which they use to mediate and interpret the world around them – have been constituted by public ideological forces. They have collaborated with others in building alternative pedagogies and support systems, enabling them to teach, and at the same time, reflect on the assumptions behind and the effects of their teaching. The result is the work collected here.
