Ènver A. Makaev's "The Language of the Oldest Runic Inscriptions" was published in 1965, but it has never reached the broad readership it deserves within the world's scholarly community because it was written in Russian. Reviews in Western journals called attention to this work, but they could not replace direct access to the work present translation into English makes this important contribution to runic and Germanic linguistic scholarship available at last to the scholarly world at large, not merely as the subject of historiographical interest, but as a still valid appeal to runologists everywhere to abandon the wild and unfounded speculations so rampant in runological studies and to adopt a more scientific approach to these most ancient of all Germanic texts, in keeping with the advances in comparative and historical linguistics.

Corpus linguistics in Sweden: Pioneers and their context first presents the early international development for corpus linguistics and the institutional and disciplinary conditions for research on the subject in Sweden. Accounts of the first generationsof Swedish innovators in the 1960s then demonstrate the significance of the international scholarly development and external funding for their success. An analysis of the international development of the researsh field points to two well-defined clusters: one consisting of scholars with a background in language studies and another with scholars of cognitive science and psychology with an interest in language acquisition and language loss. Moreover, the study shows the increasing institutionalization of the field over time through the foundation of professional associations and journals.

Chinese characters were simplified in 1956, ten years after their Japanese counterparts. This book traces the origins of simplified form and compares it with rejected alternatives. It concludes that 90 to 91 percent of the new official Chinese forms were in use before the reforms, compared with nearly 100 percent of the Japanese ones. About 80 characters were simplified differently in China and Japan. Our survey shows that these differences existed already before the reforms, and that the differing outcomes were thus predestined. Roar Bökset has a PhD in Chinese Language from Stockholm University and has previously published A dictionary of nonstandard simplified Chinese characters (1986). This volume is a revised version of his dissertation Long story of short forms: the evolution of simplified Chinese characters (2006).
