This collection explores the relationships between theory and evidences in functional linguistics, bringing together perspectives from both established and emerging scholars. The volume begins by establishing theoretical common ground for functional approaches to language, critically discussing empirical inquiry in functional linguistics and the challenges and opportunities of using new technologies in linguistic investigations. Building on this foundation, the second part of the volume explores the challenges involved in using different data sources as evidence for theorizing language and linguistic processes, drawing on work on lexical cohesion in language variation, neuroimaging and neuropathological data, and keystroke logging and eye-tracking. The final section of the volume examines the ways in which evidences from a wide range of data sources can offer new perspectives toward challenging established theoretical claims, employing empirical evidences from corpus linguistic analysis, keystroke logging, and multimodal communication. This pioneering collection synthesizes perspectives and addresses fundamental questions in the investigation of the relationships between theory and evidences in functional linguistics and will be of particular interest to researchers working in the field, as well as linguists working in experimental and interdisciplinary approaches which seek to bridge this gap.

This volume offers a comprehensive account of language development from a Systemic Functional Linguistic (SFL) perspective, integrating theory and data from a wide range of research studies. The book begins by taking an in-depth look at SFL theory and its focus on texts, highlighting the metafunctional nature of language and the ways in which individuals’ repertoires of meaning-making resources develop as they interact with the world and with others. Grounded in an SFL approach, the successive chapters consider in turn the key stages of language development, from infancy to school settings to additional, second, and foreign language learning contexts. Each chapter incorporates a range of SFL studies to demonstrate shifts in language development across these stages, but also the discussion of other functional perspectives to examine the ways in which these different approaches inform one another. A concluding chapter considers the implications of these studies for future research as well as for pedagogical practices in literacy teaching. In its consideration of the relationship between SFL theory and its application to language development, this book will be key reading for students and scholars in Systemic Functional Linguistics, language and education, and literacy studies.

This book applies an SFL-inspired, multi-dimensional approach to Latin linguistics, offering fresh insights into Latin narrative tenses while addressing challenges posed by its closed-corpus nature. Bridging Classics and Linguistics, it categorizes the functional potential of the verbal categories “tense” and “aspect” and reshapes existing labels through a quantitative analysis of select historiographical narratives. Aerts elucidates the communicative subtleties of tense and aspect in Latin and highlights their relevance to modern linguistic methodologies and cross-linguistic investigations.Contributing to functional linguistic theory, the volume explores the semantic boundaries of tense and aspect in human languages, uncovering previously unrecognized uses in Latin and addressing obstacles in historical language analysis. It showcases how modern tools enhance reproducibility and deepen our understanding of grammatical systems, with implications for the study of Latin, Romance languages, and beyond. This book will appeal to scholars in linguistics, classical philology, and historical linguistics.

Systemic Functional Linguistics and the Individual takes as its central point that language should be studied as a social semiotic. The focus on language as a reflection of society has meant that traditionally there has been less focus upon language as a reflection of the individual in work within this linguistic framework. This collection brings together contributions from researchers who all discuss the role of the individual in systemic functional linguistic application and theory. The chapters in this volume either discuss cognitive factors in systemic functional language study or discuss meaning making at an individual instead of solely a collective level. This is illustrated through applications to education, AI, translation, and identity construction alongside more theoretical discussions. This volume will be of interest to researchers in functional linguistics, psychosocial theories of language and individual variation in language. This collection will show researchers advances that have been made in incorporating alterative viewpoints and less frequently discussed issues within systemic functional linguistics. In doing so, it hopes to inspire further work in similar areas.
