Despite policy efforts at the state and federal levels, the school dropout rate for students in the United States is estimated at a staggering 500,000-to-1,000,000 children and youth per year. And while school social workers and other professionals working with truancy and school dropout issues are well positioned to offer assistance as Dropout Prevention Specialists (DPSs), an overwhelming number of those who fill such roles go vastly undertrained and underprepared for the demands they face. Authored by a nationally leading specialist in dropout prevention, this workbook serves as a how-to guide for those in the helping professions who serve in an intervention or dropout-prevention capacity. Specifically, it guides readers through useful resources that address the varied and intersecting causes of student dropout while providing real-life anecdotal experience from the author's five-plus decades in the field. As school districts across the country continue to adopt DPSs in their schools, The Dropout Prevention Specialist Workbook aims to meet the demand of training and preparing them for the future while clearly defining needs of the work ahead.

Schools are facing increasing numbers of homeless students and school social workers and other related professionals are often at the front line of addressing the negative impact homelessness brings to individual students and the school overall. School social workers and other school-based personnel must contend with a myriad of policies and other factors related to homelessness to help students obtain an education. School-based Practice with Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness is one of the first books to focus on this topic in the context of our social work practice. This book guides practitioners through the conceptualization of homelessness, how experiencing homelessness impacts the children we serve, the policies that govern us, and finally a practice perspective. Written with practitioners in mind, School-based Practice with Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness is loaded with case studies and practice examples and is an accessible handbook to addressing homelessness in our schools.

Since the publication of the First Edition, there have been several advances on the research on Solution-focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) in schools. This Second Edition contains updates on how to apply SFBT to specific problem areas that school social workers frequently encounter. Each chapter has been updated and expanded to provide to incorporate a Response to Intervention approach (RtI) in many of the clinical "SFBT in Action" chapters. The authors also utilized results from the second national school social work survey, conducted by a team led by Dr. Kelly and currently in press at School Mental Health Journal and Social Work, to identify several targeted school-related problems that school social workers encounter in their work and demonstrate how to use solution-focused techniques for them.Despite being places with tremendous challenges for students and staff, schools are also places of solutions, strengths, and successes. This practical guide shows school social workers how to harness the solutions; filled with case examples, key points to remember, guidelines for reviewing resaerch, sample dialogue, and best practice tips, this book gives readers the essential tools to begin incorporating SFBT into their practice immediately.

Children in all educational levels are vulnerable to abuse, neglect, bullying, violence in their homes and neighborhoods, and other traumatic life events; research shows that upwards of 70% of children in schools report experiencing at least one traumatic event before age 16. Though school social workers are on the front lines of service delivery through their work with children who face social and emotional struggles in the pursuit of education, there are scant resources to assist them in the creation of trauma-informed schools. This book presents an overview of the impact of trauma on children and adolescents, as well as interventions for direct practice and collaboration with teachers, families, and communities. Social work practitioners and students will learn distinct examples of how to implement the ten principles of trauma-informed services in their schools; provide students with trauma-informed care that is grounded in the principles of safety, connection, and emotional regulation; and develop beneficial skills for self-care in their work.

Though schools have become the default mental health providers for children and adolescents, they are poorly equipped to meet the mental health needs of their students. Evidence-Based Practice in School Mental Health differs from other books that address child and adolescent psychopathology by focusing on how to help students with mental disorders in pre-K-12th-grade schools. Chapters address the prevalence of a disorder in school-age populations, appropriate diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis, comorbid disorders, available rapid assessment instruments, school-based interventions using multi-tiered systems of support, and easy-to-follow suggestions for progress monitoring. Additionally, the text shares detailed suggestions for how school-based clinicians can collaborate with teachers, parents, and community providers to address the needs of youth with mental health problems. Each chapter finishes with extensive web resources and real-life case examples drawn from the author's clinical practice. This book serves as a helpful resource for school-based mental health providers (e.g., school social workers, school psychologists, and school counselors), communities-in-schools coordinators, and MSW students focusing on child and adolescent mental health.

School social work enters its second century as a profession still conflicted about its central mission. Are school social workers meant to be "in-house" clinicians providing services to kids in need, or are they meant to be involved in program development to enhance the social and emotional learning of all students in a school? How much time should they devote to serving whole families, or consulting with teachers? Whatever school social workers claim to do in their schools, it's clear that they are going to have to prove that they are effective doing it. The demands of federal legislation like No Child Left Behind and state requirements for certification are making it increasingly necessary that school social workers demonstrate that they are highly qualified school-based mental health and social service professionals who can demonstrate outcomes that impact school "bottom line" issues like student achievement, attendance, and behavior. Rather than recoil from this pressure, school social workers can utilize the skills of evidence based practice (EBP) to help them enhance both their effectiveness and their knowledge of interventions that work to help students, teachers, parents, and staff in school contexts. A succinct SSWAA Workshop volume, The Domains and Demands of School Social Work Practice demonstrates how EBP can be integrated into school social worker's daily practice, advancing the debate about where social workers can and should intervene, and how to do so effectively. Highlighting primary clinical issues, family problems, and school-wide needs faced by school social workers, it helps practitioners make the best use of evidence to be flexible, effective advocates at all levels of practice.

Mounting evidence shows that zero-tolerance policies, suspensions, and restrictive security policies fail to improve school safety and student behaviors, and are linked with increased risk of dropping out. Minority students are suspended at disproportionate rates, and over a million cases of corporal punishment are reported each year. Against this dismal backdrop, David Dupper presents a transformative new model of school discipline that is preventive, proactive, and relationship-based. Unlike traditional punitive and exclusionary practices, the model developed in this Workshop volume focuses on enhancing students' connection to school through building relationships and bolstering social skills. Drawing on the latest research about what works, and what doesn't, this highly practical guide catalogs an array of proven and promising practices designed to engage, instead of exclude, students. Rather than illustrate a one-size-fits-all approach, it guides practitioners and administrators in identifying their school's unique needs and selecting appropriate strategies for use at the universal, targeted, and remedial levels. A five-step strategic planning model helps schools transition toward a holistic, relationship-based approach to discipline.

Research has shown that truancy is frequently associated with juvenile crime and dropping out of school altogether. With the high dropout rate in the U.S. and the No Child Left Behind Act holding schools accountable for their dropout rates, it is essential for school social workers to contribute to their schools' improvement plan in meeting annual yearly progress benchmarks. This book, by well respected researchers and practitioners who have extensive experience with truancy, covers best practices in truancy at the community, school, and student/family levels of interventions. It provides an essential everyday reference guide to research-based programs and truancy program implementation. Beginning with an introduction to the essentials of truancy, its causes and consequences, and state and federal legislation, the authors then give readers a snapshot of what research has shown to work so far and what adaptations might look like in various school settings. Richly detailed case examples illustrate multiple levels of intervention, from the school-wide prevention and general policy levels to remedial interventions, including culturally competent approaches. Eminently practical and easily accessible, with sample forms, methods of measuring outcomes, ideas for funding, take-away points, and digestible research summaries, this will be a trusted toolkit for school professionals seeking to reduce their schools' dropout rates and improve students' engagement with school. School-based practitioners and student trainees alike will find a wealth of reliable information about what is seemingly an intractable problem. They can immediately begin implementing the proven and promising practices presented in this practical guide.

Ethical predicaments are endemic for mental health professionals working in schools. New interventions, evolving technologies, and a patchwork of ethical and legal guidelines create a constant stream of potential dilemmas. The seven-step model presented in this book allows readers to apply a practical process to complex questions while both minimizing liability and protecting students.Beginning with an introduction of the moral, legal, and clinical foundations that undergird ethical practice, James C. Raines and Nic T. Dibble present an ethical decision making model with seven steps: know yourself and your responsibilities, analyze the dilemma, seek consultation, identify courses of action, manage clinical concerns, enact the decision, and reflect on the process. Ethical Decision-Making in School Mental Health provides ethical guidelines from four different professions and addresses mental health issues in schools. This new edition includes meticulously updated chapters based on recent changes to all of the codes of ethics over the past ten years.

Despite their institutional preparation and lived experiences, new school social workers encounter numerous practices, political considerations, community engagement strategies, and seemingly fundamental elements involved in the learning curve needed to move from entry-level to proficiency. The Art of Being Indispensable What School Social Workers Need to Know in Their First Three Years of Practice contains content specific to what they will need in their first three years of practice, bridging the learning gap from their academic preparation to early employment in P-12 settings. Organized into four sections - The Host Environment, The Macro School Social Worker, Integration and Intervention, and School Social Worker Sustainability - the content of the book is framed by a mixed-methods study on the needs of new practitioners. It is an indispensable guide that new school social workers can consult to effectively execute their roles and responsibilities.

From slavery in the 19th century to racial disparities in school discipline that push them into the juvenile justice system, historically Black children have been denied a childhood. While schools are tough on Black children, Black caregivers often use "tough love" to prepare them for the world they will encounter. But if everyone is tough on Black children, who is gentle with them? Who allows them to be children? This book helps mental health professionals understand how racism, prejudice and discrimination contribute to mental health and behavioral issues in Black students that lead to high rates of school discipline, also known as the Preschool-to-Prison Pipeline. It explores how bias shapes the way the behaviors and moods of Black children are often misinterpreted and punished through unfair and subjective disciplinary methods. Mental health professionals are challenged to advocate for the mental health needs of Black students by using play therapy to engage caregivers, teachers, and administrators in providing culturally responsive support and nurturance to enhance their relationships with Black children. Using music, art, sand, and other expressive therapies, the book provides over 30 unique interventions for Black students of all ages to heal from racial trauma. The activities allow Black children the opportunity to process issues they encounter, like colorism and hair discrimination, while learning healthy skills to manage the trauma, anxiety, and depression that often results from their daily exposure to racial stress. The book is to help empower mental health professionals to feel more competent and comfortable to support the unique needs of Black students and pass that knowledge on to the adults in the lives of Black children and allow Black children to reclaim their childhood.

With the complexity of change that PreK-12 schools are facing, frameworks are needed to understand what the 2020s and beyond will require of the school community. While some educational stakeholders are calling for a return to the "three R's" (reading, writing, arithmetic) most educational scholars and futurists envision public schools expanding comprehensive service delivery systems that meet multiple educational, behavioral, and social needs of students and their families. This vision of expanded service delivery includes community partnerships that address students' resource and mental health needs, educational collaborations that bring learning from the community into the classroom, and wellness initiatives that emphasize health and wellbeing for all stakeholders. Concurrently, social work as a profession is adapting to the increase in online mental health services, re-examining its history, practices, identity, and complicity in oppression, and revisiting its roots of community-based practice and activism. The profession has increased its footprint in policy advocacy and support for segments of the population targeted by certain policymakers such as the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) populations and the Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) populations. The profession is still tentatively advancing toward full technology adoption, including utilization of technology-supported social work interventions. With this background of change facing society, Emerging Trends in School Social Work Practice focuses on the challenges and opportunities to further develop the professional specialty of school social work. The book examines 13 different emerging trends through the lenses of school social work practitioners and academic scholars working in partnership for each chapter. The book's editors, former school social workers and current social work scholars, worked with a national team of authors to write the chapters on the new landscape for this micro-mezzo-macro career. The information in this text will help school social workers prepare, plan, and develop their existing knowledge into accelerated skills needed to meet these demands. The book concludes with a chapter written by school social work leaders examining their burgeoning role in the PreK-12 educational landscape and leaving breadcrumbs for others to follow their path to greater influence.

School-based practitioners, like other front-line mental health workers, have been under increased pressure and stress as the demand for their services continues to increase. Given the mental health provider shortage in the US, it is imperative that School Social Workers (SSWs) do not succumb to the pressures of the job and become unable to practice. In Self-Care and Organizational Practices for School Social Worker Resilience, Lou Paschall examines the unique characteristics of SSW practice that challenge the wellbeing of practitioners. Including stories from Paschall's decades of experience as a practicing SSW, the book discusses Social Work within the education system and identifies various occupational hazards--from burnout and compassion fatigue to secondary traumatic stress and vicarious traumatization. To address these occupational hazards, Paschall consults the guiding ethical documents of the profession--The National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics--to recommend practical strategies for individual self-care and professional self-advocacy, as well as organization-level strategies to promote SSW wellness. Paschall addresses the challenges that lead to SSW burnout, offers compassionate advice for SSWs and organizational leaders to ensure SSW wellbeing, and practical methods to promote SSW safety and resiliency.

Spanish-speaking immigrant youth comprise one of the fastest-growing populations in public schools in the United States. Schools are well-positioned to serve as cultural bridges and conduits to broader U.S. society. When those institutions are inclusive and culturally responsive, they play powerful roles as drivers of acculturation and integration, with significant positive implications for well-being and academic achievement. However, U.S. public education is rooted in antiquated one-size-fits-all policies that are a remnant from a system designed to serve primarily white, U.S.-born students. As a result, schools often perpetuate values associated with assimilation, or eschewing one's identity and culture of origin in favor of becoming wholly "American."To address this institutional harm, Culturally Responsive School Social Work with Central American Immigrant Students explores the lived experiences, cultural wealth and strength, and broader contextual dynamics that affect Central American immigrant youth. Recognizing the ideal position of school social workers to lead the charge for culturally responsive and affirming clinical and advocacy work, Stephanie Carnes offers practical strategies and techniques for effecting change. Using case studies, reflection exercises, self-care activities, and brainstorming prompts, Carnes identifies what makes Central American immigrant students unique and lays the groundwork for fostering truly culturally responsive school social work practice at both the individual and systemic levels.

Schools across the US will continue to contend with the effects of students experiencing homelessness as families and communities continue to face precarious housing and economic conditions. School social workers, counsellors, nurses, psychologists, and other related-services personnel are often at the forefront of addressing educational needs for children and youth experiencing homelessness. School-based Practice with Children and Youth, 2e is one of the few books that guides practitioners on navigating the various conceptualizations, policies, and school-based practices with students experiencing homelessness. With uncertainty around programming and policy, this book guides practitioners on the key components and approaches to addressing the challenges many children, youth, and families experiencing homelessness face as they pursue educational opportunities. The book takes readers through an understanding of homelessness as an issue, the impact it has on child and youth outcomes, the policies that govern how we practice, specific, policy-based positions within the school, and finally, a practice perspective to help frame our approaches to work with students experiencing homelessness. Written with practitioners in mind, the book is loaded with practical examples and serves as a solid handbook about how to address the educational needs of students experiencing homelessness. This will leave readers with a way to frame thoughts and practices to help students experiencing homelessness in their educational pursuits.

Embracing Neurodiversity: A Social Work Approach to Building Inclusive Schools and Communities offers a transformative framework for reimagining how educators, clinicians, and social workers support neurodivergent students. Grounded in social work values and the human rights model of disability, this book bridges research and practice to challenge compliance-based systems and cultivate environments where every learner can thrive. Drawing from lived experience, clinical insight, and current scholarship, Dr. Sara Rodrigues invites readers to move beyond awareness toward action by integrating strengths-based, affirming, and trauma-informed approaches into everyday school practice. The book explores the intersection of theory and application, guiding readers through key areas such as identity and language, sensory and emotional regulation, peer connection, dedicated interests, and the systemic inequities that shape neurodivergent students' experiences. Designed for social workers, educators, and allied professionals, Embracing Neurodiversity emphasizes collaboration, advocacy, and community engagement as tools for sustainable change. It offers practical strategies for classroom inclusion, policy reform, and family partnership, while centering neurodivergent voices and honoring their expertise. More than a professional guide, this book is a call to action, urging schools to move from accommodation to belonging, from deficit to dignity, and from "managing behaviors" to understanding human diversity in all its complexity and brilliance.

Functional behavioral assessment (FBA) is an important element in developing effective behavior interventions in schools. By understanding how the environment predicts and maintains problem behavior, school social workers can change those environmental conditions and facilitate positive behavior. Although FBA is traditionally applied within the context of special education, it is relevant to supporting behavior of all students in a school. In this book, the authors explore how FBA can be applied in a three-tiered model of prevention and provide tools and case examples to facilitate application. This process is described as occurring within a team context wherein the school social worker serves as a facilitator and contributor with behavioral expertise. In Tier 1, FBA is applied to the behavior of all students in a school and leads to the development of school-wide behavior interventions that are intended to prevent students from developing more serious patterns of problem behavior. In Tier-2 FBAs, the behavior of at-risk students is assessed in an efficient manner to determine which available evidence-based interventions will be effective in improving their behavior. In Tier 3, FBAs involve extensive individual assessments of the conditions that maintain the problem behavior students with significant behavior problems. This book provides detailed information about conducting FBAs at each tier of prevention and reviews the process of developing interventions from the FBA information at each tier. As initiatives encouraging positive behavior support in schools proliferate, this book will help school social workers develop the skill set necessary to maintain their role as important contributors to student outcomes.

Bullying is one of the most prevalent and insidious forms of school violence today, impacting the learning environment of schools in profound ways. Victims of chronic bullying have poorer grades, increased rates of truancy, increased rates of dropping out, loss of self-esteem, feelings of isolation, depression, and increased risk of suicide attempts. This Workshop volume is unique in utilizing a larger cultural context and international perspective that broadens the traditional conceptualization of bullying and that promotes creative approaches to a seemingly intractable and complex problem. In addition, senior researcher and practitioner David Dupper investigates several "under the radar" forms of bullying (e.g., religious bullying, bullying by teachers and other adults in schools), as well as the unique challenges in assessing these largely unacknowledged forms of bullying in today's U.S. public schools. Viewing bullying as a systematic abuse of power, this book examines all the ways in which power is misused in schools. Dupper also dispels important myths about bullies and focuses on the increasingly important role that peer witnesses play in exacerbating as well as combating bullying in schools.Consistent with an ecological systems perspective, this book utilizes a whole school approach as a framework for developing and implementing comprehensive evidence-based interventions to combat bullying in schools. The result is a must-have resource for both undergraduate and graduate students in social work courses, school psychology courses, and education courses, as well as student service workers in secondary schools.

School social workers engage in different forms of consultation on a daily basis, yet they rarely think about or describe this work as 'consultation.' Further, school social work practice research finds that consultation is among the most frequently performed practice tasks, yet consultation is rarely defined in school social work literature or research. This book adapts the consultation theory and practice framework put forward by June Gallessich (1982) that defines consultation in specific terms and proposes that there are six models of consultation. These models are organizational consultation, program consultation, education and training consultation, mental health consultation, behavioral consultation, and clinical case consultation. The models are differentiated according to their problem focus, outcome goal, intervention methods, change processes, power base, and value system.School social work consultation services are an important pathway to help school systems fulfill their educational mission and to help school personnel become more effective in their professional work. It is consistent with current trends in educational policy that call upon school social workers to take a multisystem approach to addressing school needs on a school-wide, class-wide, or individual level. The overarching goal of the book is to provide school social workers with the knowledge, skill, and confidence to implement consultation services. Consultation is a powerful method to 'realize the promise of the whole-school approach' and to help homes, schools, and communities foster school success and student well-being.
