Writing in the Margins

A former attorney, Marilyn Adler Papayanis received her Ph.D. from Rutgers University and teaches English at Montclair State University. She was named the winner of the 2001 Durrell Prize for New Scholarship.

This is a brilliantly conceived project. Marilyn Papayanis has identified an important lacuna in post-colonial theory's representation of the politics and poetics of otherness. Her deployment of Bowles, Lawrence, Durrell, Ondaatje, and DeLillo's writings to address colonial discourse analysis' neglect of the significance of the figure of the expatriate is both persuasive and timely while her attempt to produce a coherent narrative of 'the relational arts of the self' demonstrates both pizzazz and imagination.
