    Integrated mobile 5G and 6G non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) are rapidly becoming the backbone of global communications. A novel Direct-to-Device (D2D) network enables standard smartphones and IoT devices to connect directly to low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites without specialized hardware, providing ubiquitous coverage. Advancements in satellite manufacturing and reusable launch vehicle technologies have stimulated the emergence of LEO mega-constellations, driving significant research, engineering efforts, and commercial innovation. Welcome to the new space race!The aim of this book, Towards Integration 6G NTN Non-Terrestrial Networks with 5G NR-NTN Satellite Connectivity: A Practical Approach Using MATLAB®, is to provide fundamental motivation, trends, and benefits related to the convergence of terrestrial and satellite technologies, the standardization timeline and requirements for NTN integration in 5G, use cases, system architecture, and design aspects, enabling technologies, challenges, and opportunities. It provides an in-depth coverage of the ITU-R and 3GPP standardization processes for 5G-Advanced as well as initial 6G NTN study items. It also reviews research activities from academia and industry regarding 3D networking opportunities and highlights associated challenges. Finally, this book provides results from NTN system experiments, MATLAB models for energy consumption, capacity simulation and coverage-map visualization, satellite scenarios, and a 6G NTN channel/link simulator.The book is divided into three major parts:Convergence of mobile networks and satellite communicationsResearch in integrated TN and NTN networkingNTN system modelling in simulations and emulationThe main originality of this book lies in a practical guide to developing a multilayered NTN simulator in MATLAB, with a strong emphasis on user configurability for both research and practical design applications. In addition, a GUI-based MATLAB simulator is illustrated in detail, along with explanations of the codes used in the performance evaluation of a 3GPP-compliant NTN link-level model. Overall, this book is intended for readers with a basic engineering background who seek to develop a solid foundation in the fundamental concepts of 5G and 6G hybrid non-terrestrial networking.

    Dragorad A. Milovanovic received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering and Magister degreee from the University of Belgrade, Serbia. From 1987 to 1991, he was a research assistant and, from 1991 to 2001, a PhD researcher at the Department of Electrical Engineering, where his interest included the simulation and analysis ofdigital communication systems. He has worked as an R&D engineer in DSP software development for the digital television industry. He also serves as an ICT lecturer in medicine/sports informatics, as well as a consultant in the development of standards‑based solutions. He has participated in research and innovation projects and published more than 300 papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He has also co‑authored reference books in multimedia communications published by several reputed publishers. His current projects include adaptive coding of 3D video immersive media and integrated 5G and 6G non‑terrestrial network communications.Tulsi Pawan Fowdur received his BEng (Hons) degree in Electronic and Communication Engineering with first‑class honors from the University of Mauritius in 2004. He was also the recipient of a gold medal for producing the best degree project at the Faculty of Engineering in 2004. In 2005, he obtained a full‑time PhD scholarship from the Tertiary Education Commission of Mauritius and was awarded a PhD degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 2010 by the University of Mauritius. He is also a registered chartered engineer of the Engineering Council of the UK, fellow of the Institute of Telecommunications Professionals (UK), and senior member of the IEEE. He joined the University of Mauritius as an academic in June 2009 and is presently an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Mauritius. His research interestsinclude mobile communications, artificial intelligence, networking, cybersecurity, telecommunications applications development, Industry 4.0, energy‑efficient communications, and the Internet of Things. He has over 100 publications in these areas, including nine books, and is actively involved in editorial activities and the organizationof international conferences.Zoran S. Bojkovic is a full professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Belgrade, Serbia, life senior member of the IEEE, full member of the Engineering Academy of Serbia, member of the Scientific Society of Serbia, and member of the Athens Institute for Education and Research. He has served, and continues to serve,as a visiting professor worldwide. He is the author/co‑author of more than 500 publications, including monographs, books (published by Prentice‑Hall, Wiley, McGraw Hill, Springer, CRC Press/Taylor & Francis Group, IGI Global, and WSEAS Press), book chapters, peer‑reviewed journal articles, and conference and symposium papers. Some of his books have been translated in China, India, Canada, and Singapore. His research focuses on computer networks, multimedia communications, green communications, 5G, and beyond. He is a highly regarded expert within the IEEE community, contributing to the growth of the communications industry and societyreviewing process in many journals as well as organizing special sessions and being general chair and TPC member at numerous conferences all over the world. His additional activities include serving as editor‑in‑chief and associate editor for several prestigious international journals.
