It has been suggested that there exists a continuum of brain abnormalities and cognitive difficulties associated with increasingly severe manifestations of cardiovascular risk factors and diseases that precede vascular cognitive impairment and may ultimately culminate in stroke or dementia.This second edition examines the relations of a host of behavioral and biomedical risk factors, in addition to subclinical and clinical CVDs, to brain and cognitive function. For this sixth volume 01 proceedings stemming lrom a Symposium on the Applications 01 Laser Techniques to Fluid Techniques, we have selected thirty one papers which are presented in live chapters. They represent some 01 the best papers presented at the Sixth Symposium which was again held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, this time lrom 20 to 23 July 1992. The total number of papers at the Symposium was slightly larger than in 1990 and was selected from a much increased number of abstracts, with a considerably smaller of accepted manuscripts. Thus, this volume represents some 01 the best 01 the best. The topics we have chosen to include are Laser Anemometer Optics and Processing, Two-Phase Flow Instrumentation, Whole-Field Velocimetry, Complex Flow Applications and Engine and Combusting Flows, and they show that there continues to be a healthy interest in the development 01 understanding of the methodology and its implementation in terms 01 new instrumentation, and this is emphasised by the increasing number 01 companies which have attended the Symposium in recent years in order to demonstrate their range 01 products. At the same time, it is clear that there is an increasing range of applications 01 the corresponding laser techniques and this is represented, in part, by the chapters concerned with Complex and Engine and Combusting Flows. In general, we are very pleased with the way the application 01 laser techniques has grown and hope that this se ries 01 Symposia has played its part.

The role of energy in the modern world goes beyond mere technology and economics to influence welfare, environment, life quality and, broadly, civilisation. Since the industrial revolution, energy conversion technology has been at the forefront of innovation required to satisfy the needs of mankind. This technology more than others has always been very dependent on the performance of the materials used; especially over the last two decades during which efficiency and environmental concerns have become challenging objectives. In this context the European Commission has developed significant collaborative programmes in Europe within the COST framework, to enhance the state of the art in this technology. The Li~ge Conferences pursue the mission to report on the achievements of these programmes in the light of progress made elsewhere. The first four conferences in this series were held in 1978, 1982, 1986 and 1990, and provided the opportunity to present and review the work of the EuropeanMaterials Collaborative Programmes COST-50 (gas turbines), COST-505 (steam turbines) and COST- 501 (energy conversion from fossil fuels). The proceedings of these conferences were published by Applied Science Publishers (1978) and by D. ReideIlKluwer Publishing Company (1982, 1986 and 1990). While the first two Conferences have dealt essentially with high temperature alloys for gas turbines (COST 50), the third and fourth Conferences held in 1986 and 1990 were concerned with a broader range of topics, including the work of the third round of COST-50 (1972-1983), that of COST-50l, which was initiated in 1981 and COST 505 (1983-1990).

In addition, it will provide information to assist the pathologist in making determinations of the origin of lesions as well as its relevance to human risk.Toxicologic Pathology: Nonclinical Safety Assessment, Second Edition includes 2 new concept chapters. The first of the new chapters address approaches for the evaluation of unique therapeutic modalities such as cell therapies, gene therapies, and gene expression knockdown therapies. While these still represent new developing therapeutic approaches, there has been significant experience with the therapeutic modalities in the last 5 years. The second new chapter addresses the nonclinical safety assessment of medical devices, a topic of increasing importance that was not addressed in a unique chapter in the first edition. The other concept chapters have been updated and cover important topics including the overview of drug development; principles of nonclinical safety assessment; an introduction to toxicologic pathology; techniques used in toxicologic pathology, clinical pathology, toxicokinetics, and drug development toxicogenomics; and spontaneous lesions. The 13 organ system chapters provide the specifics related to pathologic characteristics, differential diagnosis, and interpretation of toxic responses in each organ system. These chapters are specifically important for the bench pathologist but also for the toxicologist who interacts with pathologists and function as study toxicologists and project team representatives in the drug development arena.
