This book addresses how pre-service mathematics teachers (PMTs) can be better prepared to design and teach lessons that engage students in reasoning and proving (R&P), a core yet persistently challenging aspect of mathematics education. Building on the European MaTeK project, the book presents a multi-phase intervention developed collaboratively by five universities to enhance PMTs’ design capacity in teaching R&P across diverse curricular contexts.Grounded in current international research, the book combines theoretical and empirical perspectives on R&P, lesson design, and teacher design capacity. It analyzes PMTs’ evolving understanding of reasoning, their task and lesson designs, and their reflections on classroom implementation. The findings highlight the transformative potential of international collaboration and structured feedback in preparing teachers for contemporary classrooms.Combining conceptual clarity with practical examples, the book offers valuable insights for mathematics teacher educators, researchers, and curriculum developers. This Open Access book provides an overview of research being undertaken in Europe about young children's (1-8 years old) mathematics education. Exploring a wide variety of different environments wherein mathematics concepts in childhood education, this book encompasses the most important findings of the POEM6 conference. Following feedback at the conference, participants have the opportunity to expand the papers into full length book chapters, which will then be peer-reviewed. This book is especially suited for educators and researchers interested in the development of mathematical conceptualizations in early childhood educational environments.

The book provides strong evidence that research on the cognitive processes from arithmetic thought to algebraic thought should take into consideration the socio-cultural context. It is an important contribution to the literature on linguistic structure in comparative studies related to Chinese student mathematics learning. This book not only makes a great contribution to research in mathematics education, the findings of this study also addressed insightful approaches and thoughts of understanding the development of algebraic thinking in cultural contexts for classroom teachers. Using written Chinese language from different theoretical references provided wonderful approaches for understanding student algebra cognitive development in a different way and calls educators for to pay special attention to an epistemological and linguistic view of algebraic development. The findings inform classroom teachers that the cultural context plays an important role in student learning mathematics.
