I första boken om Tannie Maria blev mrs van Harten, som hon egentligen heter, hjärtespaltsansvarig i Klein Karoos lokaltidning the Gazette. Detta ledde henne in på spåret till ett mordfall och mordutredningen ledde henne i sin tur till Ladysmiths egen kriminalkommisarie Henk Kannemeyer. I bok nummer två har Henk och Tannie Maria blivit ett par men minnena från Marias äktenskap med Fanie gör sig påminda och Maria tvingas uppsöka en psykolog för att komma vidare. Spåren efter misshandeln hon då utsattes för har lämnat oläkta sår i själen och hon törs inte släppa Henk in på livet. Inte nog med detta. Under Klein Karoos stora kulturevenemang i Oudtshoorn, Klein Karoos Nasionale Kunstefees, mördas bushmänfolkets talesperson Slimkat Kabbo. Sydafrikas ursprungsbefolkning har nyligen vunnit en domstolsseger över ett gruvbolag som vill prospektera för diamantbrytning på bushmännens mark och Slimkat var den som gick i bräschen för motståndet.
