Dallas, who defined the periodical as 'the great event in modern history', the book explores these premises and conclusions regarding authorship, publishing, and readership, considering the nineteenth century as a whole. This volume comprises of a substantial selection of E.S. Dallas’s journalism in The Times. Although his reviews were crucial not only in forging the literary reputations of upcoming writers such as different as George Eliot and Mary Elizabeth Braddon, but also in recalibrating the response to well-established authors such as Tennyson and Dickens, Eneas Sweetland Dallas (1827-79) remains arguably the most unjustly neglected of mid-Victorian critics. Although Dallas wrote for many other periodicals, it was his reviews in The Times that had the greatest impact on both the market for books and literary culture in the mid-Victorian period. This collection brings together an anthology of his contributions, as well as a newly written introduction, a comprehensive listing of the articles he submitted to The Times, critical apparatus to contextualise the materials, and a detailed chronology, reappraising Dallas’ biography. This volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of literary history.

The principal aim of this collection of articles is to explore the evolving generic patterns and the modes of transnational distribution of popular narrative over the course of the nineteenth century. This volume addresses networks of reception drawn around cities as diverse as Constantinople, Moscow, and Tokyo, with a focus on peripheries in South and West Asia, and Northern as well as Eastern Europe; in generic terms, there are specific investigations of shipwreck narratives, satirical cartoons, press reports, orally transmitted folklore, traditional sacred tales, and adventure novels. It combines the materialist approach of book/media history with the aesthetic insights of literary and cultural studies, drawing inspiration from the seminal work of scholars such as Benedict Anderson, Franco Moretti, Pascale Casanova, and Arjun Appadurai.

Providing a collection of E.S. Dallas's work, this volume explores the significance of the Scottish writer’s practical and theoretical contributions to both the criticism and journalism of the mid-nineteenth century, as well as offering an edited selection of Dallas’s writings in the Victorian press. This book provides a comprehensive listing of around 250 contributions to other periodicals, and again offer a generous edited selection of around 40 articles that are representative of this body of work as a whole. The source materials were published between the summer of 1850, just after Dallas left Edinburgh University, and early 1881 when a posthumous article appeared two years after his death; they appeared in periodicals issued daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and even annually, in both Edinburgh and London; and generically, they range from book reviews both literary and non-literary, coverage of theatrical and other performances, articles on a cornucopia of social, cultural and philosophical issues, and reports from Paris as special correspondent both during and after the Franco-Prussian War.

The editors have transcribed 2,500 of Wilkie Collins's letters, around 700 of them previously unidentified, and have given them all a full scholarly annotation and context. The letters shed light on the personal life and business activities of this creative Victorian personality.
