This book is the first of its kind to make concise connections that tie faith-based engagement with the UN’s sustainable development goals, humanitarian governance, while also linking this to media studies and multilateralism.Focusing on the nexus between faith-based engagement, the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and humanitarian action, this book examines the role of faith-based NGOs (FBOs) in realizing the UN’s SDGs and carrying out humanitarian action. It explores if and how they are different from secular NGOs and how they communicate and articulate their role, as well as the wider trends in faith-based engagement globally, and if these trends have a positive impact on democratization efforts, including on freedom of expression and multilateralism. The intention of the book is to shed light on inter- and intra-religious partnerships, alliances between religious and secular partners across multiple contexts, how they communicate within and between organizations, in an evolving media landscape, and to enable a better understanding of how international development, humanitarian work, and human rights are being articulated and incorporated in their work.This book will be of interest to students and scholars of media and communication, religion, sustainable development and humanitarian action, as well as policymakers and professionals working in human rights, foreign policy, and media outreach.
