The Emergent Past approaches archaeological research as an engagement within an assemblage - a particular configuration of materials, things, places, humans, animals, plants, techniques, technologies, forces, and ideas. Fowler develops a new interpretative method for that engagement, exploring how archaeological research can, and does, reconfigure each assemblage. Recognising the successive relationships that give rise to and reshaped assemblages over time,he proposes a relational realist understanding of archaeological evidence based on a reading of relational and non-representational theories, such as those presented by Karen Barad, Tim Ingold, and Bruno Latour. The volume explores this new approach through the first ever synthesis of Chalcolithic and EarlyBronze Age mortuary practices in Northeast England (c.2500-1500 BC), taking into account how different concepts and practices have changed the assemblage of Early Bronze Age mortuary practices in the past 200 years. Fowler argues that it is vital to retain the most valuable archaeological tools, such as typology, while developing an approach that focuses on the contingent, specific, and historical emergence of past phenomena. His study moves from analyses of changing types of mortuary practicesand associated things and places, to a vivid discussion of how past relationships unfolded over time and gave rise to specific patterns in the material remains we have today.

As people move through life, they continually shift affiliation from one position to another, dependent on the wider contexts of their interactions. Different forms of material culture may be employed as affiliations shift, and the connotations of any given set of artifacts may change. In this volume the authors explore these overlapping spheres of social affiliation. Social actors belong to multiple identity groups at any moment in their life. It is possible to deploy one or many potential labels in describing the identities of such an actor. Two main axes exist upon which we can plot experiences of social belonging – the synchronic and the diachronic. This collection of 24 papers aims to reconsider the nature and significance of the Irish Sea as an area of cultural interaction during the Neolithic period. The traditional character of work across this region has emphasised the existence of prehistoric contact, with sea routes criss-crossing between Ireland, the Isle of Man, Anglesey and the British mainland. A parallel course of investigation, however, has demonstrated that the British and Irish Neolithics were in many ways different, with distinct indigenous patterns of activity and social practices. The recent emphasis on regional studies has further produced evidence for parallel yet different processes of cultural change taking place throughout the British Isles as a whole. This volume brings together some of these regional perspectives and compares them across the Irish Sea area. The authors consider new ways to explain regional patterning in the use of material objects and relate them to past practices and social strategies. Were there practices that were shared across the Irish Sea area linking different styles of monuments and material culture, or were the media intrinsic to the message? The volume is based on papers presented at a conference held at the University of Manchester in 2002.

This title, the next in the Neolithic Studies Group Seminar Papers series, presents a selection of case studies from across Neolithic continental Europe, Britain and Ireland as examples of recent and ongoing archaeological research on kinship.Kinship has often been seen as central to how many societies operated in the past, and there is a very long and complex history of research on it in anthropology. Debate actively continues, centred around whether kinship is essentially a matter of biology or should be seen as a social construct, or some combination of the two. Until fairly recently, archaeology has done very little in detail with kinship, despite its probably central importance in past social relations. The recent development of aDNA research has changed things fundamentally, with prolific studies indicating, for the Neolithic, diverse situations where biological relatedness can be documented, but also others where biological relatedness is either absent or not so prominent. Neolithic studies therefore face the challenge of coming to terms with evident diversity and needing to find nuanced interpretative approaches to kinship; they also have the opportunity to begin to chart detailed trajectories of change. The coverage of the book will illustrate diversity across time and space, as well as exploring the many approaches now possible to the significance of kinship. It will help to give the archaeological reader a reflective and nuanced understanding of the very broad range of possible approaches to the study of kinship in the past. This is the only book on kinship focusing exclusively on Neolithic Europe, offering readers a wide sample of current and ongoing research across Europe. It will reflect on combining a broad range of evidence; while most of the chapters will be concerned with depositions in the mortuary sphere, and some will make use of aDNA data derived from that sphere, contributions will also cover other dimensions of practice, including settlements, architecture, and material culture.
