Translating Chinese Art and Modern Literature examines issues in cross-cultural dialogue in connection with translation and modern Chinese art and literature from interdisciplinary perspectives. This comprises the text-image dialogue in the context of Chinese modernity, and cross-cultural interaction between modern literature in Chinese and other literatures. This edited collection approaches these issues with discrete foci and approaches, and the ten chapters in this volume are to be divided into two distinct parts. The first part highlights the mutual effects between literary texts and visual images in the media of book, painting, and film, and the second part includes contributions by scholars of literary translation.

Offering the first systematic overview of modern and contemporary Chinese literature from a translation studies perspective, this handbook provides students, researchers and teachers with a context in which to read and appreciate the effects of linguistic and cultural transfer in Chinese literary works. Translation matters. It always has, of course, but more so when we want to reap the benefits of intercultural communication. In many universities Chinese literature in English translation is taught as if it had been written in English. As a result, students submit what they read to their own cultural expectations; they do not read in translation and do not attend to the protocols of knowing, engagements and contestations that bind literature and society to each other. The Bloomsbury Handbook of Modern Chinese Literature in Translation squarely addresses this pedagogical lack. Organised in a tripartite structure around considerations of textual, social, and large-scale spatial and historical circumstances, its thirty plus essays each deal with a theme of translation studies, as emerged from the translation of one or more Chinese literary works. Following the enormous success of the 2009, 2011 and 2013 occasions of the International Poetry Nights in Hong Kong, the “International Poetry Nights in Hong Kong 2015” (IPNH K2015) will be held in November 2015. The Organizing Committee of IPNH K2015 will continue to accomplish the mission of making literature a more prominent part of daily life in Hong Kong, by organizing more literary activities such as this biennial event. IPNH K2015 brings together internationally renowned poets from different partsof the world to create opportunities for college and high-school students, as well as for local writers and the public to meet the invited poets through IPNH K2015 activities, broaden their horizon in the reading of world poetry, and be aspired by the writing of their local environment. IPNH K2015 also seeks to foster close collaboration with institutions of tertiary and secondary education, connecting higher education with the public at large for the sake of knowledge transfer.The theme of IPNH K2015 is “Poetry and Conflict,” which explores the multi-layered relationships between poetry and war. Poetry has been generally recognized as the highest form of language, while war inflicts the most pains on human history. IPNH K2015 invites world-acclaimed poets from war-troubled countries in the past such as the United States (Anne Waldman, Peter Cole), Japan (Tawada Yoko, Mizuta Noriko), South Korea (Kim Hye-soon), Macedonia (Nikola Madzirov), Catalonia (Gemma Gorga), Portugal (Fernando Pinto do Amaral), Burma (ko ko thett), Morroco (Mohammed Bennis), Mainland China (Wang Xiaoni), Taiwan (Chen Li), Hong Kong (Yin Jiang), and those of today such as Israel (Agi Mishol) and Palestine (Ghassan Zaqtan, Najwan Darwish). These poets, who engage their works with “war” as a topic, are going to exchange views and explore the many layers where equanimous poetry is able to play its role in the most violent events in human history, and in so doing, encourage writers and readers of war-free Hong Kong to reflect upon the local milieu in a global framework.

International Poetry Nights in Hong Kong (IPNHK) is an award-winning biennial poetry festival established by renowned contemporary Chinese poet Bei Dao. Since its debut in 2009 in Hong Kong, IPNHK has become the most influential series of international poetry events in the sinophone areas, delivered internationally acclaimed poets’ thoughts and ideas about poetry to contemporary China, and stimulated Chinese poets’ reflection upon their own conditions of reading world poetry. Following the enormous success of previous editions, IPNHK’s 2017 event is scheduled to happen between 22–26 November in Hong Kong, with the theme “Ancient Enmity”, and invites more than twenty poets and lyricists from different parts of the world to share and read their works, in the hope of encouraging exchange among poets and lyricists. Poets include Gabeba Baderoon (South Africa), Javier Bello (Chile), Chen Dongdong (China), Jérôme Game (France), Major Jackson (US), George Szirtes (UK), Anja Utler (Germany), Haris Vlavianos (Greece) and others. The IPNHK anthology includes selections of the most internationally acclaimed contemporary poetry by the invited poets, accompanied by unique Chinese and English translations in bilingual or trilingual formats.
