Clergy have a pivotal role in creating and nurturing church communities in which all people can grow up into Christ. This book explores the nature of that role by considering key similarities with the essential but often conflicting demands of motherhood. Like mothers, clergy need to preserve and hold people faithfully, while encouraging them to grow, take initiatives and become more confident and self-supporting. This book will help clergy to think about how this is achieved through the myriad of 'small' things they do from day to day, highlighting skills such as comforting, cherishing and multi-attending - skills that are centrally important but often unarticulated and undervalued.

The Study of Ministry is a comprehensive guide to the theory and practice of ministry that attends to historical sources, the social sciences, pastoral theology, ecclesiology and cultural studies. The book argues for the study of ministry to be taken seriously as an aspect of ecclesiology and pastoral theology, providing a stimulating resource both for practising ministers and for all those training for ministry in a range of denominations.

In recent years, the repeal of Roe vs Wade in the United States and a number of high-profile cases in the UK have ignited intense public debates surrounding the sensitive issue of abortion. While the Pro-Life movement, often driven by religious convictions from Roman Catholic and conservative perspectives, has made its stance clear, other Christian arguments in favour of abortion have been notably less pronounced, frequently emphasizing exceptional circumstances.Emma Percy steps into this important conversation, offering a thought-provoking pastoral theology that takes a deeply empathetic approach to pregnancy and motherhood. In How Do We Talk About Abortion? she delves into the complex motivations behind women's decisions to terminate pregnancies, treating this topic with the gravity it deserves. Percy considers abortion as a pastoral concern, recognizing how abortion decisions are shaped by circumstances and often not discussed, and how inherited Christian attitudes to women, sex and contraception can encourage silencing. How Do We Talk About Abortion? situates abortion within the wider realities of infertility and reproductive loss, considers the question of prenatal testing in dialogue with disability theology, and explores God’s providence in the unfairness of human procreation. The final chapter turns to pastoral practice, the language of sin and the possibility of appropriate rituals.Carefully navigating the intricate intersection of faith, ethics, and reproductive choice, this new volume invites readers to reconsider preconceived notions and engage in a compassionate dialogue surrounding abortion and pregnancy loss from a Christian perspective that will move the discussion forward.BLOGPOST: Talking pastorally about fertility and beyond by Emma Percy on the SCM Press blog here.

Drawing together original research which weaves together ideas from theology, philosophy, feminism and writing on mothering and child development, Emma Percy affirms and encourages aspects of good practice in ministry that are in danger of being overlooked because they are neither well-articulated nor valued. Offering a fresh look at parish ministry, this book uses a maternal metaphor to provide an integrated image of being and doing. The metaphor of mothering is used to explore the relational aspect of parish ministry which needs to value particularity and concrete contingent responsiveness. Percy suggests virtues that need to be cultivated to guard against the temptations to intrusive or domineering styles of care on the one hand or passive abnegation of responsibility on the other. Parish ministry cannot be understood in terms of tangible productivity; different ways of understanding success and evaluating priorities need to be developed. The book suggests ways of being ’good enough’ clergy who can find the right balance between caring for people and communities whilst encouraging and acknowledging the maturity of others.
