This title was first published in 2000: This third volume of proceedings of the European Network for Biomedical Ethics focuses on the ethical issues surrounding the debates on reproductive medicine and genetics in human procreation. Central issues include procreation and parenthood, moral protection of the human embryo and foetus, autonomy and recognition, social implications, moral reasoning in applied ethics, legal regulations of assisted procreation, genetic diagnosis and gene therapy. The legal regulation paper evaluates the central laws and guidelines of European countries.

Unaccompanied migrant children are the most vulnerable group of migrants and refugees. Their experiences, their contested legal status in the host countries, and their treatment before, during, and after migration call for an ethics of child migration that places unaccompanied migrant children at the center. This volume gathers international experts from the fields of social work, social science, law, philosophy, and Catholic ethics. Social science, psychological, and social work studies, analyses of US and international law of child migration, refuge and asylum policies, and several case studies regarding law enforcement highlight the more recent shifts in policies both in the United States and Europe. The current policies are confronted with two major normative frameworks that go beyond migration laws or the international refugee and asylum provisions: the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child, and the approach of the Catholic social ethics of migration.The authors address the challenges of childhood under the conditions of migration: the uprooting of lives, the journey and transition into foreign countries and cultures, and the transition into adulthood. They discern the legal provisions and obstacles of the immigration process, the securitization of the borders, and the criminalization of unaccompanied migrant children. Catholic social ethics, the theological authors argue, must offer more than its pastoral call for charity, solidarity, and compassion that is already in place, inspiring multiple Catholic organizations, groups, and individuals. The Christian emphasis on family rights and values, originating in the story of the Holy Family, is necessary, yet insufficient when children are separated from their parents—instead, children must be recognized as vulnerable agents in their own right, and the moral dilemmas families sometimes face be acknowledged. US and European policies must be informed by the interpretation of justice, and the principle of the common good must be held against the firewalling of the West. As a political ethics, Catholic social ethics must critique and reject the use of the Christian religion for nationalist policies and depictions of migrant children as a threat to the cultural identity of Western societies.

In her book Hille Haker pleads for a radical course correction of Catholic social ethics by focusing on three foundational concepts of social ethics: human rights, human dignity and moral responsibility based on the interplay of compassion, solidarity and justice. The author argues for a historically and politically mediated ethics that replaces the natural law ethics. The theoretical reflections of the book are carried out by the practical social-ethical studies: The politicization of individual human rights is examined in the contexts of migration, religious freedom, and criminal justice. Human dignity is spelled out as "vulnerable agency" allowing for a sharp criticism of Catholic sexual morality and neglect of women''s human rights.The book ends with a discussion of the relationship of political theology and political ethics and its social-ethical implications for the further development of a Critical Political Ethics.

La idea de lo apocalíptico sugiere actualmente el «final de los tiempos», los horrores y la condensación del tiempo histórico, que no parece dejar apenas espacio a proyectos utópicos o signos de esperanza de un nuevo comienzo. En este número abordamos qué significa lo «apocalíptico» en la tradición bíblica, cómo esta tradición sigue viva o es reformulada de forma nueva en la teología cristiana contemporánea, y qué consecuencias surgen de ella.

Todo ser humano tiene derecho a la atención sanitaria y al tratamiento con medicamentos en cualquier lugar del mundo. La investigación, el desarrollo y la distribución de medicamentos y de fármacos es una condición fundamental para conseguir el objetivo de la atención sanitaria mundial. Si la producción y la venta de los medicamentos se realizan bajo condiciones de corrupción estructural, las prioridades de la atención sanitaria ceden ante los beneficios de las empresas, y, en consecuencia, los fármacos se convierten en un producto más entre otros. El objetivo de este artículo es estudiar qué significa la corrupción estructural de las instituciones sanitarias y cómo funciona. Pondremos como ejemplo el modo en el que ha aumentado continuamente desde la década de los ochenta la influencia de la investigación y del desarrollo comerciales de los medicamentos, recurriendo las industrias farmacéuticas para su comercialización a las universidades, los hospitales, los consultorios, las revistas científicas y las agencias gubernamentales de regulación, sin que sin embargo se haya producido influencia alguna en las prioridades empresariales.
