The Newnes Know It All Series takes the best of what our authors have written to create hard-working desk references that will be an engineer's first port of call for key information, design techniques and rules of thumb. Guaranteed not to gather dust on a shelf!

Audio engineers need to master a wide area of topics in order to excel. The Audio Engineering Know It All covers every angle, including digital signal processing, power supply design, microphone and loudspeaker technology as well as audio compression.

Electronics Simplified, Third Edition, discusses the aims and methods of electronics, with emphasis on digital electronics and software options. It covers the latest developments in electronics, including Blu-ray, digital TV and radio, HD and 3D TV, robotic systems, radar, cellular phones, GPS, and microcomputers.

Organized into 17 chapters, the book introduces the reader to every aspect of electronics from fundamentals to applications, with minimal mathematics required. It provides an overview of electricity, waves, and pulses and how a steady voltage is generated, along with power, alternating voltage, and AC and DC transmission. The information on microcomputers has been greatly expanded, while information on analog fundamentals has been retained. It also discusses passive components such as transformers, resistors and capacitors, inductors, transformers, resonance, and diodes; active components and integrated circuits, particularly what a transistor is and what it does; how traditional radio works; elements of television, including color television; digital television and radio broadcasting; and digital signals and digital recording. Finally, the principles of CD recording are explained, along with the basics of microprocessors, calculators, computers, and computer peripherals.

This book is essential reading for hobbyists, technicians, professionals, and students. It is suitable for anyone taking a qualification course in electronics, or for those who want to know more about the digital revolution.

In the 1980s, although most social workers organised their time and described their work in terms of cases, research studies had cast serious doubts on the efficacy of working in this way. As a result, there had been growing anxiety about what social workers do, what they ought to do, and the training they needed.

Task-centred casework was an approach to social work which proposed a solution to some aspects of this dilemma. Growing out of the surprising results of an American research study, it broke free from the traditional psycho-analytic approach to casework. It aimed at clarity of purpose, a concentration on the clients’ perceptions of the problems, openness about clients’ and helpers’ intentions and agreement about what is to be done and achieved within a specified time.

Originally published in 1985, this book brings together three British studies that accompanied, and in some respects pioneered, the introduction of task-centred casework into the United Kingdom. The studies describe and evaluate task-centred casework with social services department clients, with young people on probation, and with men and women referred to hospital after poisoning themselves. The research suggests what task-centred casework can and cannot achieve, describes how clients experience it and seeks to define the skills it requires. The studies also provide some reasons why many previous studies of social work have failed to find evidence for social work effectiveness.

The book uses much case material to illustrate methods of task-centred casework and its outcomes as seen by clients, social workers, and an independent outsider. It should still be of interest to social workers, teachers of social work, and social work students. More generally, it will be welcomed by all those who are interested in building social work on a surer basis than anecdote and fashion.

First published in 1975, this book compiles a number of studies concerning institutional care and children, which address the question of why institutions that serve apparently similar functions differ so much.

The book uses comparative methods such as measurement of different ‘dimensions’ of institutional care and analysis of interrelationships among specific structural and functional features which characterise particular institutions. As a result, the book draws broad conclusions about the importance of factors that have dynamic influence on the manner in which institutions function and the reasons why they differ.

The editors reject the ‘steampress’ model which postulates that institutions are more or less alike. They discuss ideological and organisational variation, differences in staffing and the manner in which children respond to them, and consider these issues as factors that influence the way in which an institution functions ‘as a whole’. Subsequent chapters describe comparative studies carried out in institutions for the mentally handicapped, approved schools, residential nurseries, probation hostels, other ‘correctional’ institutions and units for autistic children. The book enables the reader to appreciate achievements and shortcomings of contemporary research and thinking in this field.
