Roberts Birds of Southern Africa has been continuously in print for some 65 years and is the most popular African natural history book of all time. The scope and depth of biological information in the Seventh edition of Roberts far exceeds that of any previous edition. It covers all 951 species recorded in the region and also illustrates these in 80 new plates commissioned from the region’s best bird artists. For scientists and conservationists it is a benchmark publication and will be a standard reference for years to come. For birdwatchers it will be an invaluable source of information to help them better understand and appreciate the birds around them.

Environmental and Low-Temperature Geochemistry presents conceptual and quantitative principles of geochemistry in order to foster understanding of natural processes at and near the earth’s surface, as well as anthropogenic impacts and remediation strategies. It provides the reader with principles that allow prediction of concentration, speciation, mobility and reactivity of elements and compounds in soils, waters, sediments and air, drawing attention to both thermodynamic and kinetic controls. The scope includes atmosphere, terrestrial waters, marine waters, soils, sediments and rocks in the shallow crust; the temporal scale is present to Precambrian, and the spatial scale is nanometers to local, regional and global. This second edition of Environmental and Low-Temperature Geochemistry provides the most up-to-date status of the carbon cycle and global warming, including carbon sources, sinks, fluxes and consequences, as well as emerging evidence for (and effects of) ocean acidification. Understanding environmental problems like this requires knowledge based in fundamental principles of equilibrium, kinetics, basic laws of chemistry and physics, empirical evidence, examples from the geological record, and identification of system fluxes and reservoirs that allow us to conceptualize and understand. This edition aims to do that with clear explanations of fundamental principles of geochemistry as well as information and approaches that provide the student or researcher with knowledge to address pressing questions in environmental and geological sciences.New content in this edition includes: Focus Boxes – one every two or three pages – providing case study examples (e.g. methyl isocyanate in Bhopal, origins and health effects of asbestiform minerals), concise explanations of fundamental concepts (e.g. balancing chemical equations, isotopic fractionation, using the Keq to predict reactivity), and useful information (e.g. units of concentration, titrating to determine alkalinity, measuring redox potential of natural waters);Sections on emerging contaminants for which knowledge is rapidly increasing (e.g. perfluorinated compounds, pharmaceuticals and other domestic and industrial chemicals);Greater attention to interrelationships of inorganic, organic and biotic phases and processes;Descriptions, theoretical frameworks and examples of emerging methodologies in geochemistry research, e.g. clumped C-O isotopes to assess seawater temperature over geological time, metal stable isotopes to assess source and transport processes, X-ray absorption spectroscopy to study oxidation state and valence configuration of atoms and molecules;Additional end-of-chapter problems, including more quantitatively based questions. Two detailed case studies that examine fate and transport of organic contaminants (VOCs, PFCs), with data and interpretations presented separately. These examples consider the chemical and mineralogical composition of rocks, soils and waters in the affected system; microbial influence on the decomposition of organic compounds; the effect of reduction-oxidation on transport of Fe, As and Mn; stable isotopes and synthetic compounds as tracers of flow; geological factors that influence flow; and implications for remediation. The interdisciplinary approach and range of topics – including environmental contamination of air, water and soil as well as the processes that affect both natural and anthropogenic systems – make it well-suited for environmental geochemistry courses at universities as well as liberal arts colleges.

As computer technology is used to control critical systems to an increasing degree, it is vital that the methods for developing and understanding these systems are substantially improved. The mathematical and scientific foundations currently used are extremely limited which means that their correctness and reliability cannot be ensured to an acceptable level. Systems engineering needs to become a fully fledged scientific discipline, and formal methods, which are characterized by their firm mathematical foundations, are playing a vital role in achieving this transition. This volume is based on the proceedings of the Formal Methods Workshop held in Drymen, Scotland, in September 1991. This was the second workshop sponsored by the Canadian and US Governments to address the role of formal methods in the development of digital systems. The workshop concentrated on the themes of quality assurance, design methods and mathematical modelling techniques. Particular emphasis was given to safety and security applications.

Preface Formal Aspects of Security (FASec) was held at Royal Holloway, University of London, 18-20 December 2002. The occasion celebrated a Jubilee, namely the 25thanniversaryoftheestablishmentofBCS-FACS,theFormalAspectsofC- puting Science specialist group of the British Computer Society. FASec is one of a series of events organized by BCS-FACS to highlight the use of formal me- ods, emphasize their relevance to modern computing, and promote their wider application. As the architecture model of information systems evolves from - connected PCs,throughintranet (LAN) and internet (WAN), to mobile internet and grids, security becomes increasingly critical to all walks of society: c- merce, ?nance, health, transport, defence and science. It is no surprise therefore that security is one of the fastest-growing research areas in computer science. Theaudience ofFASec includes thosein the formalmethods community who have(orwouldliketodevelop)adeeper interestinsecurity, andthoseinsecurity who would like to understand how formal methods can make important cont- butions to some aspects of security. The scope of FASec is deliberately broad andcoverstopics that rangefrommodelling securityrequirementsthroughsp- i?cation, analysis, and veri?cations of cryptographic protocols to certi?ed code. The discussions at FASec 2002 encompassed many aspects of security: from theoretical foundations through support tools and on to applications. Formal methods has made a substantial contribution to this exciting ?eld in the past.

ForewordfromtheProgramChairs These proceedings contain the papers selected for presentation at the 9th - ropean Symposium on Research in Computer Security (ESORICS), held during September 13-15, 2004 in Sophia Antipolis, France. In response to the call for papers 159 papers were submitted to the conference. These papers were evaluated on the basis of their signi?cance, novelty, and te- nicalquality. Eachpaper wasreviewedby at leastthree members of the program committee. The program committee meeting was held electronically; there was an intensive discussion over a period of two weeks. Of the papers submitted, 27 were selected for presentation at the conference, giving an acceptance rate lower than 17%. The conference program also included an invited talk. A workshop like this does not just happen; it depends on the volunteer e?orts of ahostofindividuals. Thereisalonglistofpeoplewhovolunteeredtheirtimeand energy to put together the workshopand who deserve special thanks. Thanks to all the members of the program committee, and the external reviewers, for all their hardwork in the paper evaluation.Due to the large number of submissions the program committee members were really required to work hard in a short time frame, and we are very thankful to them for the commitment they showed with their active participation in the electronic discussion.

Asia and Europe have become increasingly interconnected over the last few decades; this growth in mutual interest is due largely to their economic, political, cultural, and historical ties to one another. Due to the deepening relationship between the two regions, it seems natural to ask, “How is the European Union perceived in Asia?” This question has become very relevant to Asia-Europe relations, especially as the EU is the most significant economic partner for many Asian countries, while at the same time emerging as an increasingly prominent political and security dialogue partner for the region. This second volume offers a new and reliable insight into the perception of the EU in Asia.In 2006, the Asia-Europe Foundation and National Centre for Research on Europe (University of Canterbury) created the European Studies in Asia (ESiA) Network and initiated the “EU through the Eyes of Asia” survey. This unprecedented comparative study looks at the attitudes and citizens' perceptions of the EU in Asia, and, by 2009, has been undertaken in 12 research sites throughout Asia. In each locality, the project systematically assessed daily representations of the EU in reputable local news media, as well as the EU's imagery among the general public and the EU's vision among the national stakeholders and opinion leaders.Presenting the findings of this project, this book provides a systematic and detailed empirical insight into EU visibility in the public discourses of three Southeast Asian countries — Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines — the so-called “VIP”. The data and analyses in this work cover 2008 and the first half of 2009, and it compares the findings with those published in Volume I, which examined the perceptions of the EU in China, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand. EU through the Eyes of Asia is indispensable to policy-makers and opinion leaders in the Asian and European milieux, putting forward vital recommendations to the EU, Asian governments, the media and those managing relations between the two regions.
