Text Mining: Applications and Theory presents the state-of-the-art algorithms for text mining from both the academic and industrial perspectives. The contributors span several countries and scientific domains: universities, industrial corporations, and government laboratories, and demonstrate the use of techniques from machine learning, knowledge discovery, natural language processing and information retrieval to design computational models for automated text analysis and mining. This volume demonstrates how advancements in the fields of applied mathematics, computer science, machine learning, and natural language processing can collectively capture, classify, and interpret words and their contexts. As suggested in the preface, text mining is needed when “words are not enough.”This book: Provides state-of-the-art algorithms and techniques for critical tasks in text mining applications, such as clustering, classification, anomaly and trend detection, and stream analysis.Presents a survey of text visualization techniques and looks at the multilingual text classification problem.Discusses the issue of cybercrime associated with chatrooms.Features advances in visual analytics and machine learning along with illustrative examples. Is accompanied by a supporting website featuring datasets.Applied mathematicians, statisticians, practitioners and students in computer science, bioinformatics and engineering will find this book extremely useful.

There is a growing need for a more automated system of partitioning data sets into groups, or clusters. For example, digital libraries and the World Wide Web continue to grow exponentially, the ability to find useful information increasingly depends on the indexing infrastructure or search engine. Clustering techniques can be used to discover natural groups in data sets and to identify abstract structures that might reside there, without having any background knowledge of the characteristics of the data. Clustering has been used in a variety of areas, including computer vision, VLSI design, data mining, bio-informatics (gene expression analysis), and information retrieval, to name just a few. This book focuses on a few of the most important clustering algorithms, providing a detailed account of these major models in an information retrieval context. The beginning chapters introduce the classic algorithms in detail, while the later chapters describe clustering through divergences and show recent research for more advanced audiences.

A fundamental problem in control theory is the stability of a given linear system. The design of a control system is generally based on a simplified model. The true values of the physical parameters may differ from the assumed values. This monograph addresses stability problems for linear systems with parametric uncertainty. The application of convexity techniques leads to computationally tractable stability criteria for families of characteristic functions with nonlinear dependence on the parameters. Stability results as well as stability criteria for time-delay systems with uncertainties in coefficients and delays are reported.

Clustering is one of the most fundamental and essential data analysis techniques. Clustering can be used as an independent data mining task to discern intrinsic characteristics of data, or as a preprocessing step with the clustering results then used for classification, correlation analysis, or anomaly detection.Kogan and his co-editors have put together recent advances in clustering large and high-dimension data. Their volume addresses new topics and methods which are central to modern data analysis, with particular emphasis on linear algebra tools, opimization methods and statistical techniques. The contributions, written by leading researchers from both academia and industry, cover theoretical basics as well as application and evaluation of algorithms, and thus provide an excellent state-of-the-art overview. The level of detail, the breadth of coverage, and the comprehensive bibliography make this book a perfect fit for researchers and graduate students in data mining and in many other important related application areas.
