Eunuchs and Castrati examines the enduring fascination among historians, literary critics, musicologists, and other scholars around the figure of the castrate. Specifically, the book asks what influence such fascination had on the development and delineation of modern ideas around sexuality and physical impairment.Ranging from Greco-Roman times to the twenty-first century, Katherine Crawford brings together travel accounts, diplomatic records, and fictional sources, as well as existing scholarship, to demonstrate how early modern interlocutors reacted to and depicted castrates. She reveals how medicine and law operated to maintain the privileges of bodily integrity and created and extended prejudice against those without it. In consequence, castrates were constructed as gender deviant, disabled social subjects and demarcated as inferior. Early modern cultural loci then reinforced these perceptions, encouraging an othering of castrates in public contexts.These extensive, almost obsessive accounts of appearance, social propensities, and gender characteristics of castrated men reveal the historical lineages of sexual stigma and hostility towards gender non-normative and physically impaired persons. For Crawford, they are the roots of sexual and physical prejudices that remain embedded in the western experience today.

By 1600, the French were widely considered to be the most highly sexualized nation in Christendom. What caused this transformation? In a book addressing those interested in the transformation of monarchy into the modern state and in intersections of gender and political power, Katherine Crawford examines the roles of female regents in early modern France.The reigns of child kings loosened the normative structure in which adult males headed the body politic, setting the stage for innovative claims to authority made on gendered terms. When assuming the regency, Catherine de Médicis presented herself as dutiful mother, devoted widow, and benign peacemaker, masking her political power. In subsequent regencies, Marie de Médicis and Anne of Austria developed strategies that naturalized a regendering of political structures. They succeeded so thoroughly that Philippe d’Orleans found that this rhetoric at first supported but ultimately undermined his authority. Regencies demonstrated that power did not necessarily work from the places, bodies, or genders in which it was presumed to reside.While broadening the terms of monarchy, regencies involving complex negotiations among child kings, queen mothers, and royal uncles made clear that the state continued regardless of the king—a point not lost on the Revolutionaries or irrelevant to the fate of Marie-Antoinette.

Professor Simon Keay had a long and industrious career in Roman Archaeology. Following completion of a PhD at UCL specialising in Roman amphorae, his career included fieldwork at major archaeological sites in Spain and Italy culminating in the Portuslimen project, bringing together colleagues from across the Mediterranean to study the ports and trade networks of the Roman Empire. His research meant close involvement with the British School at Rome, as well as the Catalan Institute of Classical Archaeology and colleagues at the site of Italica, Andalusia among many others. Simon’s contribution to the discipline of Roman Archaeology was immense, and his energy and mentorship influenced scholars from many different backgrounds.This volume brings together papers authored by those who knew Simon and who were supported and enabled by his passion for archaeology, from amphora studies to research on Roman urbanism and landscapes. Each section deals with a particular area of Simon’s interests; Mediterranean ports and river systems, trade and connectivity, and landscapes and urbanism. The contributions include reminiscences of Simon and his work, together with the results of his different projects, and research that has stemmed from his scholarship. Here, these paper underscore the diversity and vibrancy of contemporary research in the areas that interested Simon, reflecting the contribution he made and the legacy of his work.
