Blackness in Opera critically examines the intersections of race and music in the multifaceted genre of opera. The early 19th century was a period of acute transition in operatic tradition and style, when time-honored practices gave way to the developing aesthetics of Romanticism, the rise of the tenor overtook the falling stars of the castrati, and the heroic, the masculine, and the feminine were profoundly reconfigured. These transformations resounded in operatic plot structures as well; the happy resolution of the 18th century twisted into a tragic 19th-century finale with the death of the helpless and innocent heroine—and frequently her tenor hero along with her. Female voices which formerly had sung en travesti, or basically in male drag, opposite their female character counterparts then took on roles of the second woman, a companion and foil to the death-bound heroine rather than her romantic partner. In Voicing Gender, Naomi André skillfully traces the development of female characters in these first decades of the century, weaving in and around these changes in voicings and plot lines, to define an emergent legacy in operatic roles.

The authors and editors understand the voice as existing both in and across contexts. Case studies oscillate between local and global phenomena to ground voicing in temporal, geographical, and political scales. From South African opera singers to Brazilian countertenors, gender-affirming trans voice care to spectrographic and documentary forms of representing voice, and Indigenous film dubbing to embodied performances of American Sign Language, this collection opens up disciplinarily and epistemologically bound topics to ask how vocality works in a multitude of ways for producing meanings around culture and identity. Moreover, this collection engages and emerges from a broad range of academic ranks, artistic practices, geographies, and identities, and engages interviews, multimedia exhibitions, and more. The contributors situate each act of voicing in its place, time, and connections to questions of power, agency, and advocacy.This book is for scholars and practitioners of voice and voice studies and those interested in the structural–and fluid–aspects of identity. Mzilikazi Khumalo (1932-2021), an iconic figure in choral music in South Africa, rose to prominence as one of Africa’s leading composers of art music. This is a work of music history.Biographical essays on Khumalo’s major works, including those for choir, orchestra, and opera are complemented by contextual studies of his compositions and arrangements as well as reflections on his roles as editor, conductor, and music director. Specifically in the context of South Africa's cultural and political transition from Apartheid to democracy, Khumalo's key role in establishing the Nation Building Massed Choir Festival, a multi-racial institution that forged an inclusive space for music, in the 1980s is discussed as evidence of his importance and relevance in South African culture.Khumalo's major works are studied in relation to contemporary art music, choral composition, and traditional song. These are UShaka KaSenzangakhona (1996), an African epic, and Princess Magogo KaDinuzulu (2002), one of the first indigenous African operas. Khumalo's artistic collaborators provide insight into their experiences working on these major projects, documenting the relationships the composer cultivated with his peers. This volume addresses a lacuna in the literature on South African art music which until recently tended to focus on works in the classical tradition and shows that Khumalo is a composer without peer in his synthesis of classical and choral, traditional and contemporary.
