Bonhoeffer remains enigmaticâpreacher, theologian, visionary, ethicist. The variety of his public roles and the breadth of his thought ensure that Bonhoeffer eludes even as he captivates. In this volume, Peter Frick seeks new dimensions of that complexity by tracing and then weighing the influence of Bonhoeffer's philosophical, theological, and social formation in order to understand his lasting significance. Frick divides his study into three parts: "Reading Bonhoeffer" explores hermeneutical and translation difficulties; "Backgrounding Bonhoeffer" unpacks how the thought of Kempis, Nietzsche, Bultmann, Tillich, and Ebeling informs Bonhoeffer's work; and "Foregrounding Bonhoeffer" models concrete ways in which Bonhoeffer speaks to issues of race, globalization, peace, politics, and social responsibility. If Bonhoeffer is enigmatic, it is equally true, as Frick reveals, that he remains endlessly relevant.

In his study Peter Frick starts with the examination of the theocentric structure of Philo's thought as outlined in the important passage De Opificio Mundi 171-2 where Philo correlates the idea of providence with his concept of God and the theory of creation. On this basis, any adequate understanding of providence in Philo must begin with the correlation between the formal aspects of the Philonic concept of God, especially the idea of God's transcendence, and Philo's conceptualization of the idea of providence in light of these formal aspects. In particular, the issue is how Philo can predicate that God is provident in nature, although God cannot be apprehended in his essence. Moreover, Philo explains the immanence of God in the cosmos in terms of the Logos and the divine powers, one of which he specifically characterizes as the providential power. Both the aspects of divine transcendence and immanence cohere in Philo's theory of creation. He conceives of the role of providence in cosmological matters as being responsible for the design, administration and continuous existence of the created universe. Two further issues, the questions of astral fatalism and theodicy, are critically important for a thorough understanding of Philo's conception of divine providence. Philo rejects the assumption implied in astral fatalism that the stars are transcendent divinities and thus have causal powers over human affairs. And he rejects astral fatalism because it renders absurd the notion of moral responsibility. Concerning the question of theodicy, Philo proceeds from the Platonic premise that God is not the cause for evil in any way. For him, the existence of moral evil exonerates God and his providence as the cause for evil and anchors the blame in the person.

Die verschiedenen Autoren untersuchen jeweils einen oder zwei Philosophen oder Theologen und zeigen, in welcher Weise deren besondere Ideen die intellektuelle Gedankenwelt Bonhoeffers formten. Dabei beleuchten sie die Größe und Reife Bonhoeffers eigenen Intellekts gegenüber den philosophischen und theologieschen Ideen der Denker, die in den Studien verdeutlicht werden. Die Autoren versuchen, die ursprüngliche Gedankenwelt Bonhoeffers zu zeigen, um mehr Licht in Struktur, Ausmaß und Zusammensetzung dieser Gedanken zu bringen.

Wie sollen wir Bonhoeffer verstehen? In den hier vorliegenden Aufsätzen versucht Peter Frick, diese Frage zu beantworten, indem er die verschiedenen Aspekte von Bonhoeffers Denken untersucht und dadurch die hermeneutischen, philosophischen, theologischen und sozialen Dimensionen seiner Schriften beleuchtet. Die sechzehn Aufsätze stammen aus den Jahren 2007-2014; einige von ihnen behandeln die Frage der Methodik, andere leisten einen Beitrag zu Bonhoeffers intellektuellem Werdegang und wieder andere versuchen eine Verbindung zu aktuellen Fragestellungen zu schaffen. Das Ziel des Bandes liegt darin, Bonhoeffers theologische und philosophische Grundgedanken aufzuzeigen und ihre aktuelle Relevanz hervorzuheben.

Peter Frick argumentiert, dass das zentrale Thema, mit dem der Apostel Paulus den Tod und die Auferstehung Jesu Christi in Verbindung bringt, die Macht der Sünde ist. Die Sünde (Singular) ist eine ontologisch-existenziale Kategorie und unterscheidet sich von den Sünden (Plural). Damit der Tod Jesu bei der Überwindung der Macht der Sünde wirksam werden kann, muss die Erlösung strikt in der neuen Ontologie der Auferstehung Jesu begründet sein.
