The reported population of American Indians and Alaska Natives has grown rapidly over the past 20 years. These changes raise questions for the Indian Health Service and other agencies responsible for serving the American Indian population. How big is the population? What are its health care and insurance needs? This volume presents an up-to-date summary of what is known about the demography of American Indian and Alaska Native population--their age and geographic distributions, household structure, employment, and disability and disease patterns. This information is critical for health care planners who must determine the eligible population for Indian health services and the costs of providing them. The volume will also be of interest to researchers and policymakers concerned about the future characteristics and needs of the American Indian population.

This book explores the shifting patterns of parenthood in the United States over the past century, focusing on the timing of first births and the social, economic, and cultural factors that influence these decisions. It highlights the concurrent bloom and bust in fertility trends, where the number of older parents has increased, while the rates of childlessness have also risen, primarily due to delays in childbearing among younger people. Through an examination of historical trends, the book considers how factors such as education, religion, and socioeconomic status influence when individuals choose to become parents. It also compares American fertility patterns with those of other developed nations, particularly Japan, to show how different cultural contexts shape reproductive behavior. The study takes a life course perspective, emphasizing how early life experiences and broader social contexts affect decisions about when to start a family. The book provides a detailed analysis of fertility trends from both macro and micro-levels, using a variety of data sources, including surveys and longitudinal studies. It also investigates the consequences of delayed childbearing, childlessness, and the timing of parenthood on family dynamics, career trajectories, and social roles. In doing so, the book offers insights into the complex interplay between individual choices and societal influences, and discusses the implications for future demographic and social change. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1988.

This title should appeal to a wide range of natural, social, and spatial scientists with interests in conducting population and environment research and thereby characterizing land use and land cover dynamics through remote sensing, demographic and socio-economic variables through household and community surveys, and local site and situation through resource endowments, geographical accessibility, and connections of people to place through GIS. The text discusses land use and land cover dynamics and the associated social, biophysical, and geographical drivers of change articulated through human-environment interactions. Case studies are used to examine theories and practices useful in linking people and the environment. Also, the need for a comprehensive and rigorous treatment of linking across thematic domains and across space and time scales for research and study within the context of human-environment interactions is addressed.

People and the Environment: Approaches for Linking Household and Community Surveys to Remote Sensing and GIS appeals to a wide range of natural, social, and spatial scientists with interests in conducting population and environment research and thereby characterizing (a) land use and land cover dynamics through remote sensing, (b) demographic and socio-economic variables through household and community surveys, and (c) local site and situation through resource endowments, geographical accessibility, and connections of people to place through GIS. Case studies are used to examine theories and practices useful in linking people and the environment. We also describe land use and land cover dynamics and the associated social, biophysical, and geographical drivers of change articulated through human-environment interactions.

This volume examines two distinct low fertility scenarios that have emerged in economically advanced countries since the turn of the 20th century: one in which fertility is at or near replacement-level and the other where fertility is well below replacement.

This volume examines ten economically advanced countries in Europe and Asia that have experienced different levels of fertility decline. It offers readers a cross-country perspective on the causes and consequences of low birth rates and the different policy responses to this worrying trend. The countries examined are not only diverse geographically, historically, and culturally, but also have different policies and institutions in place. They include six very-low-fertility countries (Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Spain, and Taiwan) and four that have close to replacement-level fertility (United Kingdom, Norway, Canada, and France). Although fertility has gone down in all these countries over the past 50 years, the chapters examine the institutional, policy, and cultural factors that have led some countries to have much lower fertility rates than others. In addition, the final chapter provides a cross-country comparison of individual perceptions about obstacles to fertility, based on survey data, and government support for families. This broad overview, along with a general introduction, helps put the specific country papers in context. As birth rates continue to decline, there is increasing concern about the fate of social welfare systems, including healthcare and programs for the elderly. This book will help readers to better understand the root causes of such problems with its insightful discussion on how a country’s institutions, policies, and culture shape fertility trends and levels.

This volume is a synthesis of the NASA funded work under the Land-Cover and Land-Use Change Program. Hundreds of scientists have worked for the past eight years to understand one of the most important forces that is changing our planet-human impacts on land cover, that is land use. Its contributions span the natural and the social sciences, and apply state-of-the-art techniques for understanding the earth: satellite remote sensing, geographic information systems, modeling, and advanced computing. It brings together detailed case studies, regional analyses, and globally scaled mapping efforts. This is the most organized effort made to understand the dominant force that has been responsible for changing the Earth’s biosphere.Audience: This publication will be of interest to students, scientists, and policy makers.
