In Hunters in the Stream, Riley Fitzhugh goes through officer training and is assigned to PC 475, a new anti-U-boat vessel stationed in Key West. The 475 is nicknamed Nameless by her crew because patrol craft vessels were only given numbers.Nameless cruises the Gulf of Mexico in search of U-boats, goes to the rescue of a sinking oil tanker, stops in Havana for meetings with the Cuban Navy, and learns of a possible secret German U-boat fueling station in the wilds of eastern Cuba. Nameless locates the base and destroys it with the ship’s gunfire and a coordinated small-arms attack led by Fitzhugh and his shore party. Later, another U-boat is reported damaged and sinking. The German survivors capture a Bahamian turtle boat, murder the crew, and head for Cuba, thinking that the fuel dump is still in operation. Fitzhugh and the Nameless pursue through the tangle of mangroves and Cuban keys, find the Germans, and finish them off in a shootout. Along the way, Fitzhugh meets Ernest Hemingway and toward the end tells him about the Nameless’s adventures. Hemingway thinks about adapting the story for his own. Fitzhugh and Hemingway’s wife, writer Martha Gellhorn, also meet and feel some mutual stirrings—and give in to them.

Riley Fitzhugh, former Hollywood private detective turned US Navy lieutenant, is recruited by the OSS for temporary duty as a naval spy in Morocco during the planning for Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa. Riley’s assignment is to kidnap a French river pilot and extract him from Casablanca.

Along the way, Riley meets an old flame from his days in Hollywood. She’s an English aristocrat who may or may not be a German agent or an Allied double. Together with an employee of the US Consulate in Morocco—a lapsed Russian rabbi—they spirit the pilot out of French Morocco to Tangier. But some surprises are waiting for all of them in the end.

Riley Fitzhugh is temporarily made officer in charge of the naval guard on board the SS Carlota, a merchant ship assigned to deliver bombs and aviation fuel to the Sebou River during Operation Torch. The Atlantic crossing was supposed to be in convoy, but Carlota breaks down after surviving a U-boat attack and is forced to limp along alone.

At the mouth of the Sebou River, Riley rejoins the Nameless, an anti–U-boat vessel, which has come down from her refit in Scotland to join the Torch attack. When the Nameless is tasked with delivering a company of Army Rangers to capture the French air force base, she and her crew must force their way through the boom guarding the mouth of the river and pass through the gunfire from the French fort on the hills above. Along the way, Riley runs into an old flame or two—one an enemy agent, the other a war correspondent from Cuba.
