Seit Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts werden in den Literatur- und Geisteswissenschaften quantitative Verfahren angewandt, um Texte zu beschreiben, zu analysieren und zu interpretieren. Bis zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts waren solche Ansätze unterrepräsentiert, gewinnen im Zuge der Digital Humanities jedoch sehr stark an Bedeutung. Ziel des Bandes ist es, quantifizierende Verfahren einerseits theorie-, methoden- und fachgeschichtlich zu kontextualisieren, andererseits aber auch mit Blick auf die digitale Gegenwart zu prüfen, welchen Stellenwert ihre Ergebnisse haben. Angesichts der innovativen Verve der Digital Humanities darf nicht vergessen werden, dass die Idee, einem interpretativen close reading ein (vermeintlich?) deskriptiv-analytisches distant reading gegenüberzustellen, nicht sehr viel jünger ist als die Idee des close reading selbst. Denn Zählen ist keinesfalls erst durch die 'digitale Revolution' der Geisteswissenschaften denkbar geworden. Vielmehr wird schon seit ungefähr 200 Jahren das, was vom späten Dilthey als Gegenstand der verstehenden und qualitativ orientierten Geisteswissenschaften bestimmt wurde, auch zum 'messbaren' Objekt erklärt.

Far from teleological historiography, the pan-European perspective on Early Modern drama offered in this volume provides answers to why, how, where and when the given phenomena of theatre appear in history. Using theories of circulation and other concepts of exchange, transfer and movement, the authors analyze the development and differentiation of European secular and religious drama, within the disciplinary framework of comparative literature and the history of literature and concepts. Within this frame, aspects of major interest are the relationship between tradition and innovation, the status of genre, the proportion of autonomous and heteronomous creational dispositions within the artefacts or genres they belong to, as well as strategies of functionalization in the context of a given part of the cultural net. Contributions cover a broad range of topics, including poetics of Early Modern Drama; political, institutional and social practices; history of themes and motifs (Stoffgeschichte); history of genres/cross-fertilization between genres; textual traditions and distribution of texts; questions of originality and authorship; theories of circulation and net structures in Drama Studies.

Volksschauspiele waren seit Jahrzehnten kein Thema der Literatur- und Theaterwissenschaft mehr. Anders auch als die ältere Volksstück- und Volksschauspielforschung des 20. Jahrhunderts nimmt dieses Buch sehr unterschiedliche Verständnisweisen von Volksschauspiel und Volksstück synoptisch in den Blick: Bauernstücke und Passionsspiele, patriotisches Nationaltheater und militärisches Propagandastück des späten 18. Jahrhunderts, Legendenspiel, Ritterspektakel und Brauchtumsspiel des 19. Jahrhunderts, aber auch Massenfestspiel, Thingspiel, Agit-Prop- und Arbeitertheater, Antivolksstück und soziales Drama des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das Buch rekonstruiert die Genese des Volksschauspiels vom 18. bis zum 21. Jahrhundert und verortet die unterschiedlichen Formationen in ihren jeweiligen literarischen und theatergeschichtlichen Kontexten. Es gibt Antwort auf die Fragen, ob und inwiefern Volksschauspiel als Idee, Dramengattung oder Behauptung gelten kann. Kommentierte Textbeispiele, die von Johann Gottfried Herder bis Elfriede Jelinek reichen, begleiten die literaturwissenschaftliche und dramenkundliche Studie.

Toni Bernhart entwickelt anhand der Romane und Erzahlungen von Hans Henny Jahnn ein Analyse- und Interpretationsmodell fur die sprach- und literaturwissenschaftliche Farbforschung. Er stellt die anhaltende Ablehnung sprachstatistischer Verfahren in der Philologie infrage und weist nach, dass quantitative Methoden nicht nur das Denotative, sondern auch das Konnotative erhellen.
