This book considers the hundred years of re-writes of Anton Chekhov’s work, presenting a wide geographical landscape of Chekhovian influences in drama. The volume examines the elusive quality of Chekhov’s dramatic universe as an intricate mechanism, an engine in which his enigmatic characters exist as the dramatic and psychological ciphers we have been de-coding for a century, and continue to do so. Examining the practice and the theory of dramatic adaptation both as intermedial transformation (from page to stage) and as intramedial mutation, from page to page, the book presents adaptation as the emerging genre of drama, theatre, and film. This trend marks the performative and social practices of the new millennium, highlighting our epoch’s need to engage with the history of dramatic forms and their evolution. The collection demonstrates that adaptation as the practice of transformation and as a re-thinking of habitual dramatic norms and genre definitions leads to the rejuvenation of existing dramatic and performative standards, pioneering the creation of new traditions and expectations. As the major mode of the storytelling imagination, adaptation can build upon and drive the audience’s horizons of expectations in theatre aesthetics. Simultaneously, it maps artistic strategies of resistance to the ideology of nationalism as employed by both state-funded and independent theatre companies, via new dramaturgies, performance practices and strategies of storytelling.

It examines arousal as a project of social, scientific, cultural, and artistic experimentation, and discusses how our perception of arousal has transformed over the last century. Probing “what arouses” in relation to the ethics of representation, the book investigates the connections between arousal and pleasures of voyeurism, underscores the political impact of aroused bodies, and explores how arousal can turn the body into a mediated object.

International, interdisciplinary and urgent, this edited collection of 15 essays explores performances of resistance to Russian authoritarianism since the collapse of the Berlin Wall, with a particular focus on the 21st century under Putin’s leadership.Against the backdrop of Russia’s Post-Soviet history of rising nationalism and war in Ukraine, this volume challenges what we consider expressions of resistance. How can we evaluate their potential to contest autocracy? In a repressive climate, how do expressions, languages and forms of resistance re-emerge, replicate and intersect across past decades and artistic mediums? How do they reveal perspectives of the other and gesture toward the future? The Russian Constitution guarantees freedom of thought, expression, and information to every citizen, prohibiting propaganda that incites social, racial, or religious hatred, and forbidding censorship. However, the reality in Russia is starkly different: censorship has long been a tool for political control, particularly since the end of the 18th century.With the war in Ukraine, these evolving mechanisms of censorship have become a penal system for retribution and control over personal freedoms. This book examines this critical moment, while highlighting that censorship in Russia predates Putin's regime. It explores both external and internal forms of censorship, including the actions of individual artists and state-sanctioned protests by far-right groups. Additionally, it looks at the closure of theatre companies due to allegations of mismanaging state funds.
