Samuel Beckett and trauma is the first book that specifically addresses the question of trauma in Beckett, taking into account the recent rise of trauma studies in literature. Beckett is an author whose works are strongly related to the psychological and historical trauma of our age. His works not only explore the multifarious aspects of trauma but also radically challenge our conception of trauma itself by the unique syntax of language, aesthetics of fragmentation, bodily malfunctions and the creation of void. Instead of simply applying current trauma theories to Beckett, this book provides new perspectives that will expand and alter them by employing other theoretical frameworks in literature, theatre, art, philosophy and psychoanalysis. It will inspire anybody interested in literature and trauma, including specialists and students working on twentieth-century world literature, comparative studies, trauma studies and theatre /art.

Revolutions is a sparkling account of political upheaval and the power of history. We think of revolutions in terms of fleeting events, such as the fall of the Bastille or the storming of the Winter Palace. In reality, they take decades to burn out, if they ever do.Historian Donald Sassoon takes the long view of some of the most famous upheavals: the English Civil War, the American War of Independence, the national uprisings that unified Italy and Germany, and the French, Russian and Chinese revolutions. This is a history rich in irony and surprises. As Sassoon shows in this tour de force account, revolutions usually catch revolutionaries themselves by surprise, and the consequences are difficult to fathom at any remove. Revolutions will change how you think about the transformative moments in history, both big and small.

What Comes After LiteratureWhen the Left enjoys the most active resurgence since the end of the Cold War thanks to the disasters of neoliberalism, The End of Modern Literature offers viewpoints or "parallax views" that enable the reevaluation of literature's significance in society, an opportunity to reimagine what has been called "literature."Sartre once conceived literature as the expression of people's revolutionary subjectivity, but today there are no more global or even society-wide must-read novels. Everyone knows literature is dead, but no one knows how it died. Kojin Karatani, the author of Transcritique and The Structure of World History and the winner of the Berggruen Prize, examines the corpse, investigates the cause of death, and offers glimpses at its afterlives from multiple viewpoints of the theory of the novel, Sartre, the 18th century aesthetics, modernization of Japanese literature, and modern world system. To Karatani's insightful analysis, this volume includes responses by Fredric Jameson, Bruce Robbins, Kenneth W. Warren, Gauri Viswanathan, Andrew Gibson, Young-il Cho, Yoshiki Tajiri, Michael K. Bourdaghs, and Joanathan E. Abel, along with an introduction that situates Karatani's essay on literature in his theoretical oeuvre. Thinking on the end of literature is also thinking on something new that is different from literature, something that comes out of what once made literature possible and meaningful.

Samuel Beckett and Catastrophe is a groundbreaking collection of original essays that explore the relation between Samuel Beckett and catastrophe in terms of war, the Holocaust, nuclear disasters and ecological crisis. Responding to the post-catastrophic situations in the twentieth century, Beckett created characters who often seem to have been through an unknown catastrophe. Although the importance of catastrophe in Beckett has been noted sporadically, there has been no substantial attempt to discuss his aesthetics and work in relation to it. This collection will therefore serve as the first sustained study to explore the theme of catastrophe in Beckett and will be a highly significant contribution to Beckett studies.Chapter “Slow Violence and Slow Going: Encountering Beckettin the Time of Climate Catastrophe” is available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.
