In The Bluegrass Reader, Thomas Goldsmith joins his insights as a journalist with a lifetime of experience in bluegrass to capture the full story of this beloved American music. Inspired by the question “What articles about bluegrass would you want to have with you on a desert island?” he assembled a delicious, fun-to-read collection that brings together a wide range of the very best in bluegrass writing. Goldsmith’s substantial introduction describes and traces the development of the music from its origins in Anglo-American folk tradition, overlaid with African American influences, to the breakout popularity of Ralph Stanley, Alison Krauss, and the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. He introduces each selection offering a wealth of additional information, making The Bluegrass Reader both enjoyable and invaluable for new fans of the music as well as for its lifetime devotees.

This is the story of drag racing's formative years, told through the feats of the people and cars involved. The simple format on a dragstrip was, and remains, two cars lining up in separate lanes to race over a straight course stretching a quarter of a mile, with the first to the other end declared the winner. The first drag racers, in 1949, were hot rodders in California whose early exploits led relentlessly to the development of the loudest and most powerful cars on earth, competing all over America and beyond. Little could those youthful tearaways have imagined that eventually cars with power outputs of 11,000 horsepower from V8 automobile engines would accelerate to over 300mph in under four seconds. Packed with authoritative information and high-quality illustration, this wonderful book explores the sport's evolution with insight and character, guaranteeing to captivate all motorsport fans.* All the star performers of drag racing - Don Garlits, Don Prudhomme, Shirley Muldowney and Chris Karamesines - feature in the book, along with unsung heroes.* From the innovative and influential to the offbeat and sometimes bizarre, dragsters in their bewildering variety are fully described and depicted in beautiful profile drawings.* Flamboyant drivers with legendary nicknames: Dale 'The Snail' Emery, Don 'Big Daddy' Garlits, Chris 'The Greek' Karamesines, 'Jungle Jim' Liberman, Tom 'The Mongoose' McEwen, 'Slam'n Sammy' Miller, Don 'The Snake' Prudhomme, 'Sneaky Pete' Robinson and many more.* Charismatic cars with renowned titles: 'Swamp Rat', 'The Blue Max', 'Freight Train', 'The World's Wildest Willys', 'Pure Hell', 'The Chizler' and 'The High & Mighty', to name just a few.* Women drivers are included in the roll of honour: the best competed on equal terms with men and convincingly won at the highest level, with Brittany Force currently holding the world record for top speed and elapsed time in Top Fuel.

The most important writings by the great and controversial Victorian polemicist.Carlyle was one of the great figures of his age: thunderous, passionate, irascible, sceptical and idealistic. This selection is representative of all stages of Carlyle's career, and includes 'Sign of the Times', his essay against the mechanization of the age and the rise of the machines; the whole of 'Chartism'; and extracts from The French Revolution, Heroes and Hero-Worship, Sartor Resartus, Past and Present, as well as other pieces. The book also includes an introduction and notes by Alan Shelston.Thomas Carlyle was born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, in 1795. Intended by his family to become a Presbyterian minister, he was influenced by the Scottish Enlightenment while at the University of Edinburgh and became a teacher instead. He later turned to literary work, publishing a life of Schiller and translations of Goethe in the 1820s. His first truly successful book was The French Revolution, which was followed by many others. He died in 1881.Alan Shelston was Senior Lecturer in English Literature at the University of Manchester until retirement in 2002. He has edited a number of Gaskell's works including The Life of Charlotte Bronte (1975) and North and South (2005), and was joint editor with John Chapple of The Further Letters of Mrs Gaskell (2000).
