Im Zuge von weltweiten Migrationsbewegungen entstehen Gemeinschaften französischsprachiger Migranten auch jenseits nationalstaatlicher Grenzen: afrikanische und arabische Migranten in französischen und kanadischen Städten; afrikanische Migranten im frankophonen Milieu von Abidjan oder Ouagadougou. Die franko-chinesische Literatur in Frankreich und Kanada hat hier ebenso ihren Platz wie die HipHop-Kultur in französischen oder westafrikanischen Großstädten. Inhalt des Bandes sind Studien, die sich im Kontext von Migration und sozialer Mobilität mit der Herausbildung von neuen frankophonen Räumen, Diskursen und Artikulationsformen befassen. Von Interesse sind hierbei die Mischungsprozesse, die Formen und Bedeutungen von Hybridität und Transkulturalität sowie die damit verbundene Infragestellung von Ideologien der Einsprachigkeit und der kulturellen Homogenität.

This is a book about language and education in one of the smallest European Union member-states, Luxembourg. It presents the results of an ethnographic study of code-switching and language ideologies among transnational, luso-descendant youngsters attending a number of youth centres in Luxembourg city. It offers a comprehensive description of the processes of construction and negotiation of new, emergent identities and ethnicities.The author considers the implications of these results for language-in-education policy, including the EU policy of multilingualism. He criticizes mother-tongue education and advocates instead the use of «literacy bridges». Clearly argued and widely applicable, this book is essential reading for students and researchers interested in multilingualism, migration and education.

A political science approach integrates multidisciplinary case studies about culture and language from multiple perspectives. Culture and language are viewed broadly with topics ranging widely across the conflict/cooperation continuum of human activities. Case studies involve four perspectives on culture and language – linguistic perspectives, cultural perspectives, identity perspectives, and visual perspectives. Each chapter is self-standing with conclusions about the case study at hand. The final chapter integrates all the case studies with separate conclusions about each of the four perspectives.

The aim of this book is not to revisit work done on code-switching as a verbal strategy, but to discuss code-switching in electronic writing. Sociolinguistic approaches have focused mainly on the analysis of oral productions. What is the position with regard to writing and, more specifically, electronic writing? In this collection dealing with code-switching situations in electronic writing the contributors give answers to the following major question: what happens when multilingual writers who belong to social networks, virtual or otherwise, communicate among themselves in one or more common languages? Special attention is given to code-switching both in CMCs (Computer-Mediated Communications) and in mobile phone use. Given the constraints inherent in both types of communication, the written productions they give rise to do not show the same features and therefore do not call for the same treatment.

How do individuals experience multilingualism and mobility in the context of Europeanization and globalisation? The contributors explore language-in-education policies and family language policies, as well as the complex interface between multilingualism and space. They provide fresh insights on key issues in sociolinguistics, multilingualism and language policy via discussion of rich qualitative data. The multiple sites analysed in the chapters are located in France, Germany, Luxembourg, Hungary and Moldova. Some of the chapters dealing with France, including one about the overseas French territory of La Réunion, are written in French.

Immigrant integration dominates the social, political, and scientific agendas of immigrant-receiving countries. Integration requires mutual co-ordinated efforts of both the host and immigrant groups. This book presents a macro level perspective on language maintenance, shift and acculturation orientations of Turkish immigrants in major immigration contexts, namely, Australia, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. The findings show a close relationship between the integration ideology, policies and practices of the receiving societies and the acculturation outcomes of immigrants. Intergenerational differences in language use and choice as well as acculturation orientations of Turkish immigrants in the four national contexts have serious implications for policy makers and researchers.
